Is there a cost/charge for asking a questions? If there is, then please don't respond to the below question.
Questions:
My 8 year old daughter has recently been diagnosed with a Baker's Cyst on the back of her knee. The Orthopedic Surgeon said that unless it growns bigger or bothers her, that we should leave it alone and that it may disappear on its own, or drain on its own within a couple of years. Is this correct?
The doctor also said regarding her Baker's Cyst--- there is no known cause for my daughter's cyst. He said that doctors don't know the cause. Another question to him was if it could have been caused by over stretching at Ty Kwon Do practice. He said no. Are there any commom causes for a Baker's Cyst in children other then "it just grew"? I know she doesn't have arthitis, at least I'm 98% sure.
Thanks,
Gail

Dear Gail,
The only charge is the effort you have to put into reading what is already on this BB. Anything up to 2 months ago is archived and you can find it there.
Once you have read the discussions already here, if you still have questions, write again. I am trying to field an average of 40-60 requests a day and cannot be expected to repeat what is already here.

I my queston is in regards to a bakers cyst. I am just comeing off of a lower back surgery, (bulging disk L5 second time in 3 years) two weeks in to recovery my left leg starts to swell and I mean swell. so off to the ER doc says blood clot (after Doplar ultra sound). superfical not much to worry about take asprin and see you family doc in 2 to 3 days. See doc and he says sounds like a plan. let me know if there is no change in a week or two. Two weeks later back at family doc. now he suspects Bakers cyst.I guess what my question really is. Is there anyway this might have anyting to do and or be related to the back surgery? My family doc and the surgeon are buddys and I am afraid I wont get a stright answer from him.

Dear Paul,
Since both disc problems AND Bakers cysts are caused by the same mechanisms, it comes as no surprise to ME that you would have one follow the other.
You need to use the link: archives and read everything you can find about spinal conditions frequently surgerized AND bakers cysts.
Remember: "To a hammer, everything looks like a nail."
Be sure to read the references.
THEN, when you begin to understand the options youu were not told about prior to your surgery, write again with any questions you might have.

Do Baker's cyst every occur from being overweight and on your feet constantly? I've just started developing these cyst over the last year. I've had 2 so far. The first one eventually went away on its own, but I've just had a flare up of another one this weekend and it is alot more painful than the previous one. Is this an indicator of things to come?

Dear Brenda,
This IS an indicator of things to come UNLESS you learn WHY you have them & do something about that.
Use the archives for this 'site and read everything you can find about Baker's cysts.
THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but what is a good treatment for the prevention of these? A friend had one when she was 14 and now at 60 has three very large ones that were misdiagnosed. In the interim, tney got large and painful and surgery is scheduled. At my suggestion she is using herbal poltices and swedish bitters to help with the discomfort until surgery. She is concerned that with the extent of the cysts, there may be nerve or muscle involvement, in which case recovery from surgery might be lengthened. Any input about treatment to speed up recovery as well as relief while waiting for it? Thanks!

I went to my physician today because I have had a pain in my right knee for about two weeks that doesn't seem to be improving. It started in the middle of the night one time. I woke up and could hardly move my leg the pain was so bad. It subsided and when I awoke the next morning, it was gone. Had a little aching the next day, but not much. Over the past two weeks, it is an off and on pain that sometimes gets so bad that my knee gets week and gives out on me. It is painful to climb stairs or ride a bike. My Dr. took x-rays and said all looks normal, but did mention the possibility of Baker's Cyst. Gave me anti-inflammatory meds and told me to do knee strengthening exercises and come back if not better in two weeks.
What exactly is Baker's Cyst and what should I be doing if that's what it is? Should I get a second opinion?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have two small children, am 31 years old and need my knees for quite a while longer.
Thanks.
Dawn

Dera Janice,
Do you think your friend would be willing to learn something new in order to help herself? If not, we would both be wasting our time here.
She would have to learn how SHE is contributing to them and learn an effective skilled relaxation technique and practice it at least twice a day for 20 minutes. She would have to listen to Doc Dave & follow his recommendations as well. In the meantime, regular, total-body, deep massage and/or Rolfing would do her a lot of good.
Once the cysts are present, surgery is the only thing I know to remove them. I am talking about preventing any new ones.

Hi, Dawn.
Use the archives to read about Bakers Cyst and the causes. At this stage, it should be completely reversable by dealing with the causes.
There has been a lot on the BB, in the past 2 months & that info has not yet been archived. Look for it on the BB.
THEN, if you still have questions, write again.
