Dear Dr. Stoll:
I am new to your BB and hope this qualifies as a health related question. I have been balding since age 20 and now at 45 am almost "clean". It usually does not bother me because I take fairly good care of my psychological health. Many new mainstream and alternative products and procedures are being developed to deal with this problem. I'm not sure the cause...is it genetics? immunity? other?
Anyway, I am curious to know if you think there is anything out there (esp. alternative, non-chemical, non-surgical and preferably not something you need lifelong) that seems to show some promise?
Again, I'm not despondent about this, just curious. Sometimes I think about shaving the entire head to get rid of the wide-part look or growing hair on my face...just a humorous thougt.
Thank You.
Tobias

Dear Tobias,
With your history, this has to be at least partly genetic. Perhaps, in another 50 years they will be able to alter the responsible gene & prevent this problem. However, even then, after 25 years.............
NONE of the current "things" on the market fulfill even one of your requirements. Hair transplant (especially the little "dot" transplants) would be your best bet----but you eliminated surgery as an option.
Shaving your head would put you into some rarified company but it is a big bother that must be repeated often.
Big GOBS of facial hair sometimes is a solution but sometimes it just calls more attention to the shining above it (grim grin).
If you were still 25, I would answer with scalp massage & the regular practice of skilled relaxation to increase the circulation to the scalp (Scalp muscle "bracing" is one of the common causes of losing "male-pattern" hair.).
Sorry I can't be of more help but, if anyone else has more to offer, perhaps you will get some more suggestions.
Walt

Dr. Stoll:
Please forego all my exceptions. What would be good options?
Came across a product in 1/96 issue of Townsend Letter by M. Walker about a product initially from Europe called THYMU SKIN. The article sounded impressive(they all do) but since Walker, who I respect, wrote it I was less skeptical. Ever heard of this?
Thanks,
Tobias

Dear Tobias,
As with all chronic conditions--especially those that are associated with aging--a serious wellness program is the most effective approach yet known.
In the meantime, considering focusing on discharging the chronic scalp muscle tension always associated with MPB would be helpful.
I have not heard of the THYMU SKIN .
If there is anyone who has had any experience with this (good or bad) I would like to hear about it.
