I've read the Bedwetting archive and have a few questions...

Posted by Carol D. on October 05, 2003 at 14:05:31:

My daughter turned four in August. She was daytime dry and in underpants, well I don't remember exactly when, but sometime in her twos probably. She continued to wear a nighttime diaper for awhile and then when she seemed to be consistently dry in that, we switched to underwear at night. It seemed like she suddenly started wetting the bed this spring. Not every night, just every now and then. I guess I didn't really think much about it at the time. I guess I thought she maybe hadn't fully learned how to be dry at night or how to wake up and go when she needed to. She still continues to wet the bed every now and then. Maybe once a month or a couple of times a month. Now that I've read the archives, I think I probably need to do a little more investigation.

Around the same time, my daughter had a few recurring urinary tract infections. The doctors said that was odd for her age to have recurring infection, so had her go for a kidney ultrasound and to a urologist. They didn't find any structural abnormalities. As far as I can tell, she hasn't had any UTIs since summer. However, she has continued to wet the bed. In addition, she now always has to urinate at night. Most of the time she wakes up to go, but not always. I am a little concerned that she cannot make it through the night without having to urinate (she used to be able to).

Another thing that happened around the same time was some extensive dental work. The dentists tell me that her enamel didn't form properly in utero, and what enamel she has is just erroding away. She had two pulpotimies with placement of stainless steel crowns this spring in addition to several fillings with mercury amalgam.

However, I wonder about the food issues (wheat and dairy), too. Can anyone explain exactly why sensitivity to wheat and dairy cause enuresis?

Also, would it seem plausible that the dental work could be contributing as well? I've read root canals and trapped bacteria, etc.

My plan at this point is to try the wheat/dairy elimination for at least two weeks and see. Since her wetting was not that often, I may have to go longer to determine whether there's an effect. I'm curious about the cause/effect relationship, though, because I feel like I'll get more support from my husband in carrying this out if I can explain the connection.

Thanks for any thoughts you have to share!

I think it's simple stress from the dental work...at that age, at ANY age, those procedures would be quite stressful..and by the way - I said "simple" stress as a joke..stress is never "simple" nor "not serious".

Hi, Carol.

My daughter is 13 now and when she was your daughter's age, she was till wetting sometimes at night. She did great during the day, but it just seemed that she slept so hard at night that sometimes she didn't wake up when she had to go. She never had urinary tract infections, but had problems with yeast infections since she was little. When she got a little older, the bedwetting stopped for the most part. She was also able to tell me that sometimes she would actually dream that she was using the bathroom and started to actually pee in her bed! She would then wake up and race for the bathroom. Neither of my two boys that this problem, so it was frustrating for both my daughter and me. It does get better, though.

Another thing I'd like to mention is the amalgam fillings. It's too late to do anything about it now short of having the fillings replaced with porcelain, but if she needs any more fillings, make sure they're not amalgam fillings. The little bit of murcury that leaches out of them can definitely be detrimental to some people and it isn't worth the risk to have them. They're stronger than porcelain, yes, but they're a health risk. They don't look as nice, either. I'm in the process of having all of mine replaced because of the connection between murcury and immune system issues. Our dentist has instructions to never place another amalgam filling in the mouths of any of my family.

Hi, Carol D.

Listen to Cheezi & Michele.

Also, a holistic dentist would know about odontons and their possible direct relationship to her bladder function.

No one knows for sure, why food allergens might have a direct relationship to this problem but they frequently do. The theory is that the peptides that happen to get through stressed gut walls are structurally identical to the peptides that make up the smooth muscle of the bladder wall. The antibodies that are formed to try to cope with this thus cause inflamation of the bladder musculature and that little bit of irritaion makes the night time bladder much easier to get triggered to empty.

The only way you will know is to totally avoid wheat and dairy for a month or so and then test out one or the other. It will only take an average of 3 1/2 days for beneficial results and the challenge test will cause enuresis within 24 hours of reinstituting it. Fortunately, she is of an age where you can more easily control her diet for this test.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt
