Alkalizing & Acidic Foods

I saw this at essense-of-life.com and thought it was interesting. I wonder what the ratios of intake should be from the two groups to maintain an optimal blood ph? Does anyone know?

I've seen that old wive's tale about acid/alkaline foods too many times. Take it from me,it is just bad science. Your blood Ph is strictly maintained within a very narrow window by your body. Even your establishment MD will tell you that. The body will even pull calcium ( a base )from your bones to maintain Ph level. Blood and body Ph has more to do with the minerals you consume. Many cultures around the world consume primarily foods from the "acid" list and have no problems with body Ph. Consider the Eskimos for example, or the Masai in Africa.

Hi Peterb,

The blood is not affected by the PH of the food you eat.
It there was much of a shift, you would die.

The urine is susceptible to the acidity of what you eat.

A friend of mine, a healer who advises her clients on nutrition, swears by "Alkalize or Die" by Dr. Theodore Baroody. I have not worked with his book, but I believe it contains recipes and advice on optimizing diet for proper balance.

in macrobiotics, fods are classified on a continum from yin to yang. Western writers have tried to define yin/yang as acid/akaline- I don't know how valid that is, but, in macrobiotics, foods like nightshades, citrus,tropical fruits and melons are extremely yin and meats and eggs are yang. Also, potassium is yin, salt is yang.
I got super healthy from 6 years on macrobiotics after 30 years of conventional diet turning me into a physical wreck,
but trying to put it all in western terms may just not work- there's a certain spiritually to the macrobiotic language that is probably part of the healing- you sort of slow down and lose the stress.
I recommend the writings in macrobiotics of Kushi, Ohsawa, and Aihara if anyone is interested in getting into that.

I've seen many acid/alkaline food lists. They vary somewhat and possibly from person to person. I'm sure I have a list or two at my Yahoo! website called alkalinizeforhealth.

A few things on this list that I don't agree with are :

Blueberries and currants are not acidic to my body
Tomatoes are acidic to me - even raw
I don't believe that winter squash are acidic - at least not to me

The ratio is not "one size fits all".... in general, most people are too acid if they drink coffee, partake in "junk" and breads/sugars.... the ph strips are pretty easy to use, though not always "perfect" but give an idea of where you are. I suggest using them every AM for at least 7 days and averaging the numbers to find out where you really are in the ph balance.

Last Sunday, I felt so lousy with lots of muscle aches and tension headaches that I decided to test my PH level using a PH testing strip (urine & saliva). I tested extremely alkaline 7.6 on a scale of 5.5 to 8.0. I usually test very acidic (around 5.8).

So, my blood may have remained at its normal PH level, but something in me was NOT at normal PH level and, consequently, affected my health.

To make matters worse, my dinner consisted of alkaline ingredients - vegetarian chili and pumpkin pie, both quite delicious I might add:-)

I believe you're overlooking the obvious. First, the ONLY source of these minerals, and other nutrients, is FOOD. Second, the disease process begins with dietary deficiency of essential nutrients, inlcuding minerals. When the necessary alkalinity is not provided in the diet, the body has to compensate by drawing from existing mineral stores, just as you say. And if I'm not mistaken, this is a description of the beginning of osteoporosis.

The digestive tract itself becomes acidic as a result of a candida infection, and the primary cause of this is a highly acidic diet, that is, a combination of foods that are deficient in nutrients necessary to maintain proper alkalinity. In my mind, it's the same thing, even though the chemical cascade that describes this process is quite complex. It's true, the alkalinity of blood will be the last bodily system to surrender it's chemical homeostatis, but that doesn't mean the individual is healthy just because of this.

I see on the list that sesame oil is acid; sesame seeds themselves are LOADED with calcium, so that probably de-acidises the seeds as opposed to the oil.

I realize the body maintains homeostatis in blood chemistry even during the worst health challenges, so what I should have asked was, "I wonder what the ratios of intake should be from the two groups to maintain an overALL optimal ph?" Sorry for the confusion.

I don't know how many times it's been mentioned but a food
can result in different chemical reactions in different individuals.
A food may produce a beneficial effect in a person, have no effect in another and may make a third person worse - William Wolcott, author of metabolic typing diet.

So, it's not the food which is acid/basic but the constitution of the person consuming the food.
Did you read the Metabolic typing diet book by Bill Wolcott and also the book authored by Rudolph Wiley?

Both of these gentlemen have arrived at the same conclusion that's been practised in Ayurveda - traditional Indian medical system - for 5000 years.

I can only answer anecdotally: I tend to the acidic constitutionally, and I respond really well to a proportion of about 80 per cent alkalising foods to 20 per cent acid. I've been on close to 100 per cent alkalising foods at times for days at a time with no negative consequences...but if I eat say 50 per cent acid, I'm not as well or energetic...

I think the kidnets regulate Ph by dumping or recycling bicarb and When That malfunctions, minerals like calcium will be pulled to buffer the ph. Not releasing CO2 from the lungs will form acid. I had to add bicarb to acidy foods for a while to avoid bad sensations.

A certain acid level is said to be healthy and Allow calcium to move in the bones Normally, but if too high, the calcium will move Out of the bones, probably trying to buffer it.

Some people have too much stomach acid production, some not enough. That has a lot to do with the ratio of acid/alkaline foods that person needs.

Type Os are supposed to be known for high stomach acid output, but I'm an O and have low stomach acid output. I use vinegar once in a while to acidify my stomach.
I've gotten too alkaline from eating all alkaline foods. Over alkalinity is much more common than many people realize.

I agree with you on every point except when you say "it's not the food ... but the constitution of the person..." since I believe it is both. I posted a discussion earlier about the proper calcium-magnesium ratio in the diet, and showed how meat eaters may require 45% more magnesium than calcium, while those consuming very low animal protein (or none) would require about 15% more magnesium than calcium. So yes, I recognize the need for individual variation.

That's very interesting. I must be right in the middle, since I register neutral on the reponse meter. However, I believe ANYONE consuming 50% acidic foods (by coloric intake, which is easy with our modern diet) is headed for disaster.
