General introduction to the concept of Biofeedback:

Biofeedback is a western, technological development that allows us to do--within a few hours--what Eastern practitioners of mind body control took a lifetime to do. Thousands of years of empirical knowledge can now be duplicated quickly by combining Eastern Wisdom with Western technology.

For example, if we attached a sensor to your blood pressure so you could see, every second, what your blood pressure was. You could then learn what you had to do to make it go down or up. You can do the same thing with skin temperature, skin conductivity, pulse rate, immunity, brain waves, single muscle cells or nerve cells, etc. As a matter of fact, anything that can be monitored with a sensor, can be mentally controlled within a few hours of training that you can do at home.

The important thing, from the perspective of this 'site, is that controlling ANY of those things will have the desirable SIDE EFFECT of reversing the storage of stress-effect in the hypothalamus 24 times as fast/minute as sleeping does. So far, this SR (Skilled Relaxation) [Also called the "Relaxation Response".] is the only way known that will unburden the hypothalamus so that it can do its job of maintaining homeodynamics in a healthy mode. ALL stress related conditions are reversed by this mechanism.

Since every person has a different sensation, when they are in the "relaxation response", each person has to experience it for themselves to KNOW that they are reaching the correct brain rhythm. Biofeedback is still the only way we know to do that reliably.

That is NOT go say that biofeedback is the only way to learn to do this SR. Actually, it is easier to do just by selecting the thing each person might select from the "Relaxation & Stress Reduction Workbook" recommended throughout all the subjects in this area. Once one has practiced, whatever they chose to practice, for 2 weeks they can prove that they are actually reaching the correct level with a biofeedback session.
