WALT,MY PSYCHOLOGIST HAS A GSR MACHINE AND NEXT TUESDAY I AM GOING TO BE TESTED TO SEE IF I AM HITTING THE "RELAXATION RESPONSE" DURING MY SKILLED RELAXATION. I HAVE A QUESTION - IF THIS MACHINE MEASURES SKIN RESPONSE, HOW CAN I BE SURE MY BRAIN WAVES ARE IN ALPHA STATE? DO I NEED AN EEG TEST?IS GSR ACCURATE ENOUGH TO BE SURE?

Dear TK,
You CAN use a direct measure of the alpha/theta brain rhythm. However, these machines are so sensitive that they are hard to use AND are a LOT more expensive.
In my experience, GSRs are closely enough tied to the "relaxation response" and respond to brain wave changes faster than any of the other modalities (except the direct brain wave machines). It would be the rare person, indeed, that would get better results from an alpha biofeedback than a GSR.
Let us know what you learn.
