help please! My daughter has tourette's

My daughter has tourette's syndrome. She just started having eyeblinking very frequently, I noticed it before but it was so seldom I wasn't concerned. Now she is doing is all the time and I am SCARED! It's so horroble to watch her. I know there are countless other things that are much worse but this is bad. Does anyone know if the tics can be reduced through diet? I would appreciate this so much. Her grandfather, uncle and 2 aunts have it but I never realized it was genetic. My husband doesn't seem to have it. Thank you, Lee

How old is your daughter? I cannot answer many of your questions, but I can tell you an experience I have had with my older son. About a year and a half ago when he was nearing 8 years of age, he began doing a lot of eye blinking/twitching and also a certain jaw movement. (We had just moved from one state to another).

As I noticed it, not knowing much about tourrette's, I asked him why he was doing it. He said he couldn't stop, yet I asked him to try. Well, the more he tried to stop the worse it got, and it began to involve the eye blinking, jaw motion, and now a head-neck jerk. Concerned, I made an appointment with the doctor.

The doctor asked me about the level of stress in the home. I told her it was pretty high, as we had just moved and were going through the process of buying a home, getting the kids into new schools, etc. She diagnosed hime with "Transient Tics of Childhood" which she said is a form of tourrette's. She predicted that it would likely improve once things settled down around here.

It did improve, and at this point there is no sign of tics at all. I would not be surprised if the tics return in the future during any period of high stress, but I don't know.

I can't say things are going to be so simple for your daughter, but perhaps all the same you can learn from my experience? I hope this helps at least a little...

Amazing what STRESS can do to all of us!!

I had tics as a child too, mainly in the neck and some eye squinting. I noted that it always got worse the more excited I was, wheter bad (stressed) or good (inspired and happy). It wasn't really severe, because I could control it if I wanted to, but of course I never bothered to try and stop it, because I would have had to think about it all the time. I don't know id it had anything to do with tourette's, but I guess there is some connection because the symptoms are so similar. So, what I'm saying (too) is that it's propably the stress. My tics stopped almost completely when things settled. (I was stressed because I was constantly teased at school)

Oh, by the way. I never even wanted to stop ticcing, because it actually feels GOOD when I do it, don't know why. It's like scratching when I'm itching...

Lee,

Here's some options. My own 8 1/2 year old son has a diagnosis of "nonspecific tic disorder." His tics involve jerky arm movements, and he's had them since infancy. He also is virtually tic-free as long as he's on a personalized combination of supplements. Dr. Stoll recommended the baseline supplements about 1 1/2 years ago, and they have remained in the mix: 1 tab Ultra Juice daily (also sold as "Juice Plus"), 1 1000 mg predigested comprehensive amino acid tab daily, and 1 omega 3-6-9- fatty acid cap daily.

Along with these, after much research, I added the following to the mix on a once daily basis: 100 mg CoQ10, 30 mg zinc picolinate, 500 mg taurine, and 500 mg histidine. The results have been remarkable.

Also vital are plenty of fresh air and some sort of exercise (Nick isn't an organized sports-type kid), and regular stretching and deep breathing. Sadly, to this point Nick is allergic to meditation. If he sits for even a brief period he breaks into giggles and that's the end of it. I keep trying. Diet is also crucial, but it's not always easy to control, given the amount of sugar and junk food he's exposed to at school at holiday parties, in-class birthdays, etc. I'm also realistic about allowing a certain amount of junk food into his life so that the absence of it doesn't make it furtively tempting. I've seen the results of food fanaticism imposed by well-meaning parents who have forced such a rigidly "perfect" vegan diet onto their metabolically carnivorous child that the kid has become a closet sugar junky. Anyway, the diet in short: mostly whole foods with allowances for real life. Nick seems to be a vegetarian/grainivore by nature, although he likes chicken.

A tremendous resource is a quarterly journal called "Latitudes: a newsletter of the Association for Comprehensive NeuroTherapy; www.latitudes.org, acn@latitudes.org, phone: 561-798-0472. Very much worth it. They should be compiling the results of a survey on nutritional supplement use for Tourette's, OCD, and ADHD.

All the best!
Kyra

Thank you so much for your input! My daughter is 3 and I have been very upset about her eye blinking lately. Your stories really helped me relax and see that it probably won't turn into the horrible tourette's seen in the media sometimes. My inlaws that have tics really have a mild form, you don't even notice it unless you are looking for it. I have a feeling sugear might be an influence, because of halloween she has been having sugar ( I try to discourage it). Thanks again!!!! Lee

Hi, Lee.

Of course it is genetic.

Since this comes from brain chemistry, ANYTHING that improves brain chemistry will help.

Get a copy of Dr Null's book "Nutrition and the Mind". Call (800)843-9660 and ask them for the references about Tourette's within the past 2 years on their service. Their business is getting the cutting edge of progress in these kind of things, from the world literature, to practicing docs. So you should offer to pay them for their time and trouble. There has been real progress in this area in that period of time.

Let us know what you learn and how she responds.

Walt

For an 8 year old who's allergic to meditation, try biofeedback with a practitioner who is experience dealing with children. After my asthma was cured by biofeedback (more than 20 years ago) I took my 6 year old (now 25 year old) son. There's no way John could have meditated, but he did fine with the biofeedback and has remained asthma free every since.

Hi, I have heard of biofeedback but that's about it. What is it and how do you find someone who does it? Lee

Hi, Lee.

That is what the glossary and the archives are for. If you do not get what you need from the glossary, go to the link I have prepared for you below.

There has been some trouble with the linking system lately so, if you have trouble getting there let me know.

How I found out about biofeedback

Back then there was no Dr. Stoll BB with its links, there weren't even any personal computers, just the monster computers in the companies and universities. I read a couple of books on biofeedback. Won't give their names because they're undoubtedly out of date. Your public library will have several newer ones. Then I looked in yellow pages. Luckily it worked out well. I suppose I could have drawn a bummer, but having read a bit I knew what to look for.
