Dr. Stoll: insect bite on foot; swollen and no improvement

Posted by Red eye on September 08, 2003 at 23:10:03:

Yesterday morning I got bitten on the foot by god-only-knows-what. It was extremely itchy and I couldn't help scratching it. The entire foot swelled up and got painful whenever I pointed my toes. I ignored it, aside from scratching it, thinking it was just a bunch of mosquito bites. But now, the next night, it is still swollen and even though my instep was bitten, my outside ankle and all the way up to my toes is swollen and red with rashes. I know I probably should have taken an antihistamine or put ice on it, but I didn't think of it. Is it too late to do anything? Is it dangerous? What should I do? Now I have a red eye AND a red foot to worry about.

Hi, Red.

You need to have a doc look at the foot. Keep it elevated in the meantime.

Someone on TV keeps stating Mylanta is a good detox for insect bites. Rubbing it on, not drinking it.

Might be a spiter bite. You should definitely have it
looked at.

Thanks, Sally.

This just goes to tell you that not everything that makes it to TV makes any sense.

The only proven thing that helps with insect bites is the immediate application of a meat tenderizer poultice held in place with a bandaid for about 24 hours.

I must remember to get the Adolph's, forgot about that. Actually it was on the Regis Philbin show yesterday and he suggested something on the market I think called the Terminator. He had been bitten by an insect that caused this unbearable itching on his foot, and it worked, but Kelly always recommends Mylanta for bites. She leans toward alternative therapies I think.
