Bee Sting Tip - Garlic?

Posted by Mary [3016.163] on April 11, 2005 at 12:40:49:

Yesterday my poor little doggie stepped on a bee and was stung right in the fleshy part of her paw. I pulled the stinger out, but my husband and I were helpless as she whined and chewed at her paw. We just couldn't get her to calm down. Coincidently, we got a call from my husband's relative from rural Mexico who told us to slice open a clove of garlic and hold it on the bee sting for a few seconds... !Santo Remedio! Our dog calmed down immediately, stopped whining and licking, and eventually dosed off to sleep. A few hours later she was up and running around normally.

Anyone else heard of this as a remedy for bee stings or know how this might have helped? I'll certainly try it for myself if I'm ever stung by a bee!

Mary

I've never heard of it before, but, I'll try it next time someone around here gets one. Those little buggers, especially wasps, sting for a long time.

not familiar with that one- one Mexican treatment for wasp stings (probably works for bees, too) is honey directly on the sting, then onion on top of that.

Interesting... as far as I know garlic onion and honey all have antiseptic properties, but analgesic, too?

Tasty, certainly. Maybe a little lime, salt and tequila would have a similar effect.

Once I got stung by a scorpion (not the nasty Southwestern desert variety, but the smaller Southeastern ones), and I called Poison Control. They said to make a paste of baking soda and water and glom that on the sting. Worked great - draws out the toxins somehow. Maybe garlic works similar.

my mom used to speculate that the onion was to keep kids from licking off the honey, but, yes, I think it has healing properties.

Meat tenderizer is what was recommended to me by Dr. Stoll for my bee sting. Check the archives.

Thanks, Mary.

WOW! New to me. I would be very interested in hearing about anyone else's experience with this.

Walt
