Ticks - YUCK!

Posted by Barbara [798.1351] on April 15, 2005 at 22:40:47:

My dog got his first tick ever. Gross! I removed the engorged tick from my lab's body today. Fortunately, I got the whole body w/a pair of tweezers. My dog now has a skin-colored bump there though. Just irritation? By the way, he's already gotten his lyme disease vacination and gets Frontline every month.

Hi Barbara, I hate those little buggers too. Your dog will be fine, the irritation will go away in a few days.

ewww! ewww! They're almost as bad as snakes .. GROSS !

I found one in my hair the other day (first time ever) and I swear I almost fainted. I hate them that much.

Problem is .. living in the country you're going to get them and when you let your dogs sleep with you ... they sometimes end up on you. Walk through tall grass by a pond or river ... time for a TICK CHECK !

The good news is that they only last about a month and a half -- at least around here -- and you can sprinkle different things on the yard to help keep them away. Just be sure what ever you use is safe for pets and humans.

We use DE ( Diatomaceous earth ) and it works pretty well for fleas too. You want to use the food grade DE though .. NOT the pool grade. Be sure to read the labels. :)

Hi Dizzy, they really are yucky little critters aren't they? Just the thought of them makes me itch. We had to stop letting our animals in because the ticks use to hitch rides into the house on them.

Watch out - my mother suddenly developed a tick allergy on her third bite and is hospitalised immediately if she is bitten now. Each occasion she has worsened. She has had to leave the valley where she's been farming cattle to live at the coast. Luckily her other, smaller property in NZ is free of ticks and she can wander about there.

My sister's dog has incurred over $1,200 in vet's bills through tick bites.

In the midwest, we seem to get them in April & May. The ticks seem to like dogs the best. Our outdoor cats rarely ever have a tick attached to their skin. Also, all the years we had horses, I have only found 1 tick on them.

what's a few ticks between friends ??))) I have had every kind and Tons of them, and all stages. Had them on me and even one inbedded, when I fell asleep on the sofa and a hound laid on the floor, Ticks climb so I was the meal. Had an infestation in the yard, where my male who was outside because my female was in heat, had 50 on him, because I didn't check his legs. He was laying a lot and they climb UP, and his side was up. I had seen 2 crawling across the yard towards him which made me check him all over, not his head an ears which is usually the place the wind up. I opened the yard door and there were 150 on the frame, and 0n the cinderblock alleyway walls, there must have been 1K. I picked them of and drowned them but had to watch the ones on the ground didn't get on my shoes. They can have 3-4K babies. Some Fun..

I was wondering about the horses .. they never, ever get ticks .. what's their secret ?

Maybe it's because they keep the grass down by eating it every day but it's still weird to me that they don't get them and they're outside .. yet I find one in my hair !

Ewww .. now I need a shower I can feel one on my back. ;)

You have to be so careful about lyme disease. We have both ticks here, red and black.

when you pull out a tick, use two fingers with nails to pinch right at the surface of the dog's skin, because engorged ticks usually have one or more tiny ticks right at the bite site waiting their turn when the big one falls off after feeding. The tick won't bite your fingers when you do it- the skin is too tough on fingers.
Lyme disease comes from little round deer ticks- supposed to be the size of a poppy seed. Dog ticks are tear drop shaped. I keep a jar with a lid and an inch of rubbing alcohol in the bottom to put them in-kills them fast.

Here is a tool to remove ticks, recommended by someone at LymeNet.org.

http://www.scs-mall.com/prodinfo.asp?dept=68&number=PTRC2M&variation=&aitem=1&mitem=3

BE SURE to wash your hands well, as some tick borne diseases can be transmitted when a tick is crushed.

Are you IN philadelphia and have this many ticks?
I'm in the burbs - and we never had a problem like that.
I use frontline on my dog - but he can still carry them in.
That creeps me out.

This looks like something that I made.

I used to use my fingernails for small ticks that had just imbeded. Turn them on their backs and scrape with my nail, and they come right out. Ones that have been in for a hile are harder and can't get them under my nails. It was a lot harder with a Long Fine haired breed. I guess the more experience you get, the easier it gets. With deer ticks, it is easier to find them when really young, with a light colored dog. First time I saw the head of a pin sized ones was on the nead of a blonde hound. Never would have seen them on the black one. She had 11 on her !!! She liked to sniff the ground among weeds.

most ticks came from the parks. FDR on south Broad St and John Heinz Preserve across from the airport. The bad infestation seemed to be brought in by something, since the alley behind the house was where they were. Don't think they came from my guys bringing them since the larva stage had to feed on something, though one of mine had a bunch on him. Don't remember if it was that time when he had 50 young ones, and they were in the alley. Had him laying on a white sheet and geting rid of the ones that came off.
