bug bite reaction worsening - help

Posted by kmd on July 14, 2001 at 00:31:28:

hey all, I'm in a big rush because we are moving. But I posted several days ago about my son's bad reactions to some mosquito bites. The one on the back of his thigh, after we thought it was getting better, is now worse again. The size is greater than a silver dollar, it is red and splotchy with grey patches. Please if anyone knows anything about bug bites, maybe it wasn't a mosquito and maybe someone can help me figure out what to do. Skin a bit warm to the touch again over that bite, but he has no pain or itching. It is growing in size, not swollen, but the redness border is expanding. What can cause this and what to do, please if anyone knows. I will check back to this BB when I can - we are in the middle of a move.

Thanks to all!

Does it appear to be a "bulls eye rash" typical
of Lyme Disease? They usually do not itch and
will expand in size until they fade.

If it is Lyme, then you want to start on a
minimum of 30 days of antibiotics to be sure
that you eradicate the infection before it
disseminates throughout his body.

I think you should see a doctor now, since it could be that he has an infected spider bite or some other kind of bite which has been contaminated by bacteria, such as staph. He may need antibiotics to cure this. My son had something like this, which I thought was a mosquito bite which turned out to be a staph infection. He was hospitalized because it went into his groin. The fact that it is warm to the touch and inflamed makes me think that. Good luck. Raisa

Olive Leaf extract will work more broadly than antiobiotics and doesn't destroy friendly bacteria in the intestines. You'll find this at your health food store. Suggest he take double the stated dosage for about a week, then standard dosage for another week. Tell him to drink plenty of water until the infection is gone.

Plantain poultice

I don't know if you have heard of Dr. Christopher. He was a famous doctor who used herbs and diet to treat his patients. One of herbs he used for local infections. I will quote a fragment from his newsletter, but you can read more here.

When we have a case of blood poisoning in a specific area of the body resulting from the sting of an insect, bee, hornet, or black widow spider, the bite of a "mad" dog, or infection from a cut or sliver, we need a powerful blood purifier that will give immediate relief to that area. Plantain (Plantago Major), Lily of the Valley leaves (Convallaria Majalis), and the common Lilac leaves have this power of purifying the blood stream in such an isolated area.
Because the Plantain is so common and grows the world over, it has become one of our favorite herbs for this infectious condition. In our own practice over the years we have seen many miraculous healings occur after using plantain. We have seen arms, legs, etc., saved from serious infection by using this amazing herb, i.e., a man with a badly swollen arm with a "red stream" from the infected hand, and who had a lump under the armpit; a girl who, after stepping on a poisonous shell, "passed out" because of the intense pain resulting from a swollen leg with the usual "red streak", etc. But let us give an example taken from Dr. Shook's works which we reprinted in our lesson material. Many other old-time Herbalists such as Dr. Nowell, Jethro Kloss, etc., tell amazing stories, but here is one I like:

A woman with only one arm came to me in great distress. She had been stung by a bee on the only hand she had left. Several years previously, she had been similarly stung by a bee. That time she had gone to a Doctor because the whole arm was swollen and she was in grave danger.

The Doctor lanced and drained the pus from the infected hand, but still the arm had continued to swell. Ultimately, the arm was amputated. This lady was in abject despair, believing she would lose her other arm.

Outside my door there was some Plantain (Plantago Major) growing. I picked some of the leaves and gave them to the woman, telling her to wash and crush them, make a poultice and apply to the part where she had been stung. Next day this lady returned to thank me and pay for my advice. The hand was entirely well. No sign of poison or inflammation was to be seen, where, but twenty-four hours before there was swelling, inflammation and risk of amputation.

Hi, kmd.

Everyone's suggestions are good. My only experience tells me antibiotics after a competent examination of the lesion.

Let us know how he does and good luck with your move.

Namaste`

Did you use the meat tenderizer?

If not, it is likely too late now.

The problem is that one must NOT put heat on bites but MUST put heat on infections. The one on the back of his thigh does sound like infection and antibiotics are the best option now since you cannot use heat in case this IS a toxic reaction instead of an infection.

ANY kind of insect can do this depending on the reactivity of the individual. People who react like this must know about the moistened meat tenderizer and apply it under a Band-Aid, for about 24 hours, as soon after the bite as possible.

At this stage the "doc on the spot" has to be the authority.

Hope this helps.

This would be helpful information on the bulletin board if you can find the time with all else on your plate right now.
