I too want to lose weight.

Posted by Roman on March 24, 1999 at 00:03:43:

I want to lose weight and I have been told that liquid diets work best. I want to restrict my calorie intake to 500 Kcal per day. Can someone tell me of a low fat, yet tasty shake I can fix, or something.

Who has been telling you this? This advice you've been getting is dubious at best. First off: if millions of dieters have learned only one thing it is that diets (i.e. short term diets that you can't live with) don't work. It is changes in eating lifestyle that work. Secondly, severely calorie restricted diets shut down the metabolism - that leaves you wide open for the yo-yo dieting syndrome. Third, "low-fat" is not the end-all-be-all of weight-loss nirvana. Dietary fat does not equate on-to-one with body fat. Third, there is nothing at all special about liquid diets except that you can't live on them.

I'd suggest getting a copy of Udo Erasmus "Fat That Heal Fats That Kill" for up-to-date nutrition information.

some ideas ...

I'll post a few ideas on loosing weight. Depending on your dedication and discipline and style these may or may not work for you.

But what works for me is this ...
1. First Plan to eat only good food for most of your meals ... ie veggies, turkey, chicken, fruit, oatmeal etc ...
(now for me I leave myself a few meals hmm ~2 each week that I have maybe lasgna, pizza, or gyro something like that). Now obviously doing this wont help you to loose weight as quick.
2. Next figure out an exercise program ie if you dont exercise regularly or havn't in awhile or whatever plan to work up to a decent level.
So start at like 3x a week for 20-30 mins then move to 3x 45 mins to hour, then 3-4x hour-hour and 15 ... aerobic type exercise like walking or riding a bike something like that.

This has worked great for me in the past when I wanted to loose weight.

don't worry about the pounds at first, you will be gaining some muscle with some fat loss so at first you wont notice the scale going down, but you will notice your pants getting bigger.

Hi, Roman.

Listen to Sean & Lincoln. Their advice is infinitely better than the ideas someone has given you so far.

MY advice is to LEARN what effects the appetite and to do that you have to become a student of why YOU gain weight & your best bet for YOU to lose it.

First of all, the appetite center responds to the need for micronutrients NOT JUST CALORIES. So, if you are low in vanadium (for example) your appetite center will continue to drive you to seek SOMETHING with vanadium in it. People with continuous hunger are always deficient in at least dozens of micronutrients. In the meantime, you will get ALL the calories attendant to that search. There are at least 100 micronutrients already known that are essential to human health with more being discovered every month. That means that a basic goal is finding a diet that it very high in micronutrients as compared with the calories in that food!

The most effective weight loss program for most people is to learn what a perfect whole foods diet is and do it strictly till one's weight is normal for at least 6 months. ANY diet that is untenable forever (such as the liquid diets you mentioned) will NEVER work in the long run because no one can stay on them forever without getting sick. Get a copy of Beth Loiselle, RD's book mentioned so often on this 'site. Call (800) 870-5378.

There are some people that have to eat for their type to lose weight. See Robert McFerran's entries on this BB & in the archives.

Also, people eat for more than nutrition reasons. There is social eating, nervous eating, depression eating, boredom eating, stress eating, etc. For those reasons learning an effective skilled relaxatin technique, and practicing it at least twice a day for 20 minutes, is ALWAYS helpful. See the testimonials on this BB about SR and look at the homepage for this 'site for info.

Finally, leaky gut syndrome (see the archives about LGS) is a major cause of obesity because it makes absorbing difficult micronutrients much more difficult. Calories are almost the easiest things to absorb and the micronutrients are, in general, much more difficult. SO even if a person eats a perfect diet, if the micronutrients end up in the stool and all the calories end up inside the person...........

All this comes down to the fact that healthy people are not fat (or skinny). Wellness is a perfect way to lose (or gain) weight. Wellness has been discussed on this BB for years (see the archives for all but the past several months which notes are still on the BB) and is also summarized on the homepage for this 'site.

Once you have ALL this under your belt, if you still have questions, write again.

Walt

Thanks for the basic understanding and encouragement!

Walt:

Thanks for writing this. Do Archive it! In fact, it probably deserves one of your "articles". Then it would really show up on your web pages and in the soon to be Glossary. This sort of information is soooooo valuable to so many people! I've personally read sooooo many diet books and have never seen a single paragraph that says it so well. Know that I'm keeping this one in my files!

Thanks also for the encouragement: "healthy people are not fat (or skinny). Wellness is a perfect way to lose (or gain) weight." I've personally wondered if I'd get "well" but still look like I look now. (very overweight, or at least very under-TALL)

Thanks Walt,

Again you gave a perfect answer. This was exactly what I was attempting to tell my friend today when she asked what she could do for weight loss. I basically told her I do not deal with weight loss but with wellness and your answer is just what I wanted to say.

I also will put this in my file. I print out a lot of things from the BB and file them according to topic, including answers to questions and testimonials. I am not that great at expressing myself verbally (although everything seems wonderful in my head) and these files will be a great help in my wellness discussions. Thanks again.

I went on Optifast in 88. Lost 100 lbs. Look great, felt great. Drank lots of water. Was not hungry. Kept it off for three years. But when I quit exercising gained it all back plus some. I'm now at 300 lbs, 40 yrs old, female and have to start over. It was easy to be on an all liquid diet (too easy). I have come to the hard realization that nothing works without exercise! I HATE to exercise! So, my advice is to eat small portions, no sugars, low complex charbohydrates, and exercise. Now, if I could just follow my own advice. Lynda

I'm finally on a diet where I'm not craving food and my hunger has diminished substantially. In five weeks I've lost 15 lbs. The best part is that the reason I'm saying no to caramel apple cream cheese pie (last night at a b'day party) is not because I want to lose weight; it's because I love not having cravings and the added energy I have!!!

What is it? In essence it's the whole foods diet that Walt's talking about. I haven't received the book by Beth yet but I've been using Suzanne Sommers diet (the new version) and from what I've gathered it's very similar, although the emphasis is on eating proteins.

I know that this may not work for you because you may not be a Hunter-Gatherer, but I hope you can find the one which fits you.

Hope this helps someone.
