HUNTER-GATHERER DIET

Posted by Ben on November 19, 1998 at 15:00:16:

How do we know that early human beings ate "correctly;" that is, their diet was ideal for human health?

Also, isn't the H-G diet based on the assumption that early humans didn't consume as many calories as we do today? I mean, did these early people sit down to three good-size meals every day?

Thank you.

Ben,

Suggesting that everyone should eat a Hunter-gatherer diet is absurd.

Our ancestors that were eating primarily a meat/fish based diet had exhuberant health simply because that was the same diet that their ancestors had eaten (with VERY little change) for thousands of years. They were simply well adapted to whatever food sources were around them.

Today, due to genetic mixing, we are forced to try different diets and find the one that yields the most energy. One diet will yield more energy by virtue of the simple fact that the metabolism that you have inherited will be optimized by eating certain foods.

Ben,

Hunter-gatherers were around from the beginnings of mankind some 4 1/2 million years ago until today. Agriculturists have been around for 15,000 - 20,000 years. Mixed metabolic types have probably only been around for 5,000 to 10,000 years.

One misunderstanding is that Hunter-gatherers killed primarily small game. The opposite was the reality --- they were experts in bringing down big game.

I think that they ate well and didn't have to forgo very long periods without food. Calorically they ate more since they were more active than the couch-potatoes that populate the U.S. today.

How long do you think it would take a family of 4 to consume one good sized deer or antelope?

Bob
