SOMEONE--HELP!!--State of Confusion!!

Posted by Greg on November 28, 1998 at 03:04:17:

SOMEONE IN THE KNOW--please advise me how to go about learning about, well--I don't know where to start.

I am 34, male, high uric acid--developed gout at age 30--now take allopurinol. Also, very slow metabolism, low thyroid level--take synthroid. Quite overweight--seems I'm almost addicted to carbohydrates--breads, etc.

Also--I have lower back problems--facet joint problems--and now sacroiliits.

I recently(past few years) lost 130 pounds using fen/phen...but when I went off of it--I became quite depressed and gained back about 80 pounds rather quickly.

QUESTION--how do I determine my metabolically correct diet? I've read thousands of posts...but most are quite specific and its difficult to generalize it to my own situation.

I really don't want to live out my life battling weight, low energy, etc.

Finally, in the past few years, I have developed allergies to various fruits...strawberries, apples, bannana's in particular. I experience anaphalactic(sp?) shock with strawberries. Interestingly, for 30 years, I ate tons of strawberries with no adverse effects. Apples always caused a burning sensation in my mouth, since childhood--always thought it was normal. When I eat the above mentioned fruit, I develop hay fever symptoms, my throat and tongue seem to swell and feel numb, and breathing becomes difficult.

Any advise or direction you can give me would be greatly appreciated. My last cholestoral screening showed it was around 200. My weight is very high---330 pounds. I'm still rather athletically inclined when my back/hip isn't flaring. I do take naproxen daily--antiinflammatory, at 500mg twice a day.

I'm not looking for a free diagnosis....just any info to guide me in the proper direction for research/reading/action would be greatly appreciated. My doctor LOVES prescribing pills---but I don't think that is the only answer.

THANK YOU.

Greg,

I think a state of ADDICTION (caused by various food allergies) has lead to your current state of confusion.

Before moving to the proper metabolic diet we need to do two things.

1) Break the cycle of food allergy addiction
2) Get you off of the Naprosyn. ALL non-steroidal anti-inflammatories make your leaky gut syndrome (and food allergies) worse.

You can kill both these birds with one stone by starting with the ELIMINATION DIET outlined in the archive section of this web site.

During the Elimination diet you will get a stronger indication of which metabolic subset you possess. For now your high uric acid suggests that you are an EXTEME Agriculturist. Of course that reading could be influenced if you were taking diuretics from your pill happy doc.

You need to run the Elimination diet and then begin testing the recommended foods (one by one) from the Agriculturist diet.

Ultimately this will also allow you to come off of the allopurinol too.

Dear Greg,

You have come to the right place but, much as all of us would like to "give" you a solution-------------that is not possible.

The solution to this (ALL of your symptoms are caused by the same mechanism.) lies in your learning enough to understand WHY you need to do what you need to do.

Toward that end, my first suggestion is for you to read "Mind as Healer, MInd as Slayer" by Dr Pelletier (most recent edition). THEN, if that makes sense to you, get a copy of MY book (link on this page).

THEN, if you still have questions, write again right here on this BB so others will be helped by watching you get well.

In the meantime, Robert McFerran's suggestions would be a good place to start. If you are a big holiday person, this might not be the best time of year to try this.

Walt

Walt, Peggy, Robert,

WOW,

I was hoping to get some response, but never expected anything so quickly! I greatly appreciate your input. I have read about the elimination diet, and plan to start it soon. I will follow Walts advice on the books, as well.

Once I get to the point of starting the diet, I will certainly keep you all updated. I hope that my journey to health will assist others as well.

Again, thanks so much for the info!

Greg
