Musings of a descendant of Hunters

Posted by Ignacio on September 08, 1998 at 13:54:45:

I noticed about five years ago, through painful trial and error, that my LGS symptoms improve (but are not cured) by eating a diet of mostly meat. When I add veggies, I get worse. I note with interest that the "party line" of the medical establishment is shifting again on the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). I now read on drug company websites that it used to be thought that the best diet for IBS was one with high fiber, but for many this makes their symptoms worse. I am one of those who is made worse. I have been trying to eat cauliflower and spinach (the veggies recommended for Hunter-Gatherers) but so far, no luck.

One observation that I have made over the years is that when I eat lots of meat my oral environment changes markedly. I get a daily buildup of thin, white-tannish, crusty crud at the base of my lower front teeth. My dentist says this is tartar. The interesting thing is that when I switch to a pure vegetarian diet (as I did recently, on the advice of a chirpractor who said it would "clean my cells") my teeth stay spic and span though my gut gets very unhappy.

About a year ago I noticed that drug stores sell metal picks to clean teeth. Before that I used to scrape the tartar off with my fingernail.

Anyone else notice the meat-tartar connection?

That's odd, I find the opposite happens with me. I eat a lot of meat, raw vegetables, some fruit, and a lot of water. I find I get tartar build up with grains.

Hi Ignacio,

I 've been on th H-G diet for about 2 months now. I've also noticed meat helps my leaky gut and was just telling Robert how I HAVE to eat meat before I can sleep at night. Went to the dentis yesterday for a teeth cleaning and she must have scraped my teeth for 15-20 min because of tartar. Back when I was a vegetarian the dentist always commented on how clean my mouth was. It's funny I ran across your post because I was just trying to figure out the same thing. Maybe the meat makes a more alkaline enviroment in the mouth?

Keeping brushing, flossing and scraping!

Linda J.
