leg bruises

I am 32 years old, about 5'7 and 110 lbs. I am writing because I have 20 bruises on my legs below the knee. I stand or walk around all day. I don't wear panty hose or stockings just socks, and I went and bought thin loose socks. Do you have any idea of what would be causing this and is there anything I can do to prevent it?
Thank you,
Jackie

Are you taking any supplemental vitamin C? Do you get adequate fruits and vegetables? These contain C and co-factors such as bioflavonoids which are very good for the health of blood vessels. Just a thought.

I saw chronic bruising clear up after starting on Vitamin C.

Hi Jackie,

There's lots of information about bruises and taking bioflavinoids to remedy them in the "supplements" archive. You can also use the website search engine and type in "bruises" and "bioflavinoids" and you will quickly find the most relevant posts.

Best wishes,

My wife gets bruises ALL THE TIME. I have been giving her ester-C with bioflavinoids (1-3 grams/day) for over a year and they have done absolutly NOTHING to prevent more bruises or heal them quicker. So you may just be genetically predisposed to get them. Also, I have found that woman in general tend to bruise MUCH easier than men.

You should try and wear support stockings or panty hose and see if that will help.

Hi Walt,

You mentioned that topical DMSO will resolve already existing bruises. After calling 7 stores (pharmacies and health food stores), I finally found one that has some, but they don't even keep it on the shelf. Since Boulder is the alternative healing capital and it's hard to find here, I imagine it would be impossible to find in other locales.

A few other stores recommended arnica homeopathic cream, or sports creams. For someone who can't find DMSO, would those be a good substitute or are there other more suitable products?

Thank you for the opportunity to learn from you.

Jon.

No one I know of on this BB has recommended ester C for bruising.

If you will go to the bruising archives you will see that the only recommendation has been at least 3000 milligrams of BIOFLAVINOIDS a day for this condition.

I had surgery on my feet when I was about 22. My feet hurt for a long time afterward, almost two years. At that time I developed a way of walking that didn't hurt. by walking on the outside of my shoes. I wore my shoes out on the outside edge. My walk became so wierd that everybody told me I was clumsy. I would drop things and run into tables. I had huge bruises all over my legs, but I didn't think it was because of my feet. Then I went to a chiropractor who told me to go to a physical therapist for my walk. She helped me correct it, so that now I don't get any bruises. Maybe you could check your shoes, and see if they are worn in one place.

Thanks, happygal.

The AMA sponsors unannounced and harassing "sweeps" to get DMSO removed from the public view mainly because it helps so many things. These sweeps are more common where alternative health is more common. Check again an a few months. It will be available again until the next harassing sweep--illegal but, since when has the AMA cared about that?

For example, Panama City is nearly a desert for alternatives and DMSO is availible in every health food store and veterinarian's office.

Enjoy!

Walt

Hi Jackie,

I thnk Jen has a good point. Even if it's not evidenced by your shoes being worn, is something physical contacting your lower legs and causing the bruises?

Best wishes,

Walt, I remember when I was about 10 years old there were huge news stories in Oregon about this. I remember people on the news claiming so many good things about this. Then, I remember all of the doctors coming on saying how this is ridiculous and all it does is give you a taste of Oysters in your mouth after applying it, making you think that it is doing something good for you. Then I remember one doctor saying how it actually can harm your heart or something. They made it sound really dangerous.

I have carried this with me ever since. I actually thought it was detrimental to your health. This post is the first I have seen mentioned of DMSO in a long time.

My DMSO story

I went to the store to buy the DMSO. The clerk brought it out from under the counter. They had two kinds, one was 99.9% DMSO, the other was 70% DMSO and 30% aloe. The clerk said it was important to know how to use it, if I bought the pure stuff I'd have to dilute it with the proper amount of distilled water, but the one with aloe was ready to use.

So I bought the DMSO with aloe. The bottle says, "Sold as a solvent only. It is unlawful to represent in any way that this product is useful or safe to use for medicinal purposes." And it's manufactured in Kentucky!

I took it home, it was the day after deep tissue massage on my calves (two days ago) and both calves had major bruises. Since I already had some arnica at home, I decided to try an experiment and used the DMSO on my left calf where the largest bruises were, and the arnica on my right calf. I applied each, one time that night, and two times the next day.

Today I went back for my next deep tissue massage, this time on my thighs. My therapist uncovers my left calf (where I had used the DMSO) and says, "So you didn't get any bruises after all!" I told her the story and then she looked in disbelief at my right calf, where I had used the arnica, because there were still major bruises there.

Very interesting!

Ok, now I'm confused. I thought DMSO was used as a carrier?

Thanks, Happygal.

No wonder the AMA is so desperate to keep it off the market!

(For Barbara N.) DMSO has many different effects.

A little followup -- The DMSO did well at making new bruises disappear, but didn't seem quite as effective with older ones.

Also, even though it had aloe in it, it irritated the skin on my right leg quite a bit -- it turned very red. I didn't have the same thing happen on the left leg, however.

It is interesting, I will continue to experiment with it and may research it to learn more about it.
