traumatic arthritus?

I had a wooden pallet fall against my leg about 2 and a half months ago. It caused massive swelling in my lower right leg and bruiseing with all the appearances of having sprained my ankle but didn't. The swelling and soreness persists to this day, almost 3 mo. later. About a month after the injury, I had an attack of arthritus in several large joints in my body.

I have had the foot x-rayed. There are no breaks or cracks. My right knee has been the most painful in the joint to the point that I went to the Dr. and he gave me Celebrex. It works but it causes me to have obsessive-compulsive repetitious thought patterns again, which I had gotten under control with stress fighting supplements. Could this injury have caused the arthritus? And do I need to see a specialist about this?

Hi, donna.

This is much too soon for arthritis to have been caused by the injury. You may have had asymptomatic arthritis before the injury and the muscle tension from the pain could have caused it to surface a few years sooner than it would have anyhow.

My concern is that no one is taking your complaints seriously and you have a venous or deep muscle injury that has not been diagnosed as yet.

You need another opinion soon. If you have a good sports medicine specialist handy, you could bring all your medical records and a concise history of YOUR experience with this, to him, and get a competent diagnosis.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Dr. Walt, I'm beginning to think that this injury has opened a door up to something else. My left ankle is now as sore as my right and is swelling a bit also. I'm wondering if the swelling in my right ankle is actually something else. The left and right ankle now feel pretty much the same in degrees of soreness and the right knee is still sore and very cranky about bending. The hip joints aren't as bad as the ankles and knee. I'm scared simply because I invision a life time of hobbling around and joint replacements.
