minor fracture in the scaphoid bone

Hello Dr. Stoll,

I am wondering about whether or not I can avoid or put off getting my wrist put in plaster. I have a quite minor fracture in the scaphoid bone. I mean, there is near full movement after a week and a half, minor pain and only if I move the wrist in a certain way. It took a bone scan for them to be sure it was fractured.
The reason I'd like to put it off is I'm visiting back home in the US in a couple of weeks (for a couple of weeks) and I am a guitar player. One of the main reasons I've set up this visit back is to play with some old a dear friends who are musicians as well. I can play now, but expect not to hardly able to with a cast.

Thanks for any thoughts in advance,!
Jp

Hi, Jean-Pierre.

To MY recollection there is no such thing as a minor fracture of the scaphoid bone. The peculiarities of the circulation to that bone frequently cuts off the circulation to the fragment; then it never heals and has to eventually be surgically removed. You really need to carefully read up on this fracture. Your doc surely has the book in his office you need to look it up in.

In the meantime I certainly would get the cast and INSIST upon having Dr Robert Becker's electronic device to promote bone healing attached to the cast. Classically, this is not used until the bone fails to heal but with your profession, if it were me, I certainly would not wait.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt
