My question is for my mother. She is 59 and broke her right ankle 4 years ago. The ankle and the foot on the right are still stiff and numb, constantly. She cannot sit for long periods of time because the numbness gets worse. (Standing feels much better) She has difficulty sleeping because the stiffness keeps her awake. She went to physical therapy and was told that that was as good as it was going to get because of the scar tissue. She compensates for the discomfort in the right foot by placing a lot of weight on the left and the left foot now causes her pain. (not numbness, just pain that Advil sometimes gets rid of) Is it true that this is something she will have to live with? She is not that old (although she complains she feels old because of her feet)and it really affects her quality of life. If anyone has any suggestions please let us know. Thanks a lot.

Hi Chrissy,
Have you tried some deep tissue massage for her? Sounds like her muscular system, from the feet to the lower back, is all distorted due to trying to compensate for that foot discomfort. I wouldn't be surprised if massage helps a lot.
Best wishes,

Hi, Chrissy.
Listen to Happygal.
How diligent was your mother about doing the PT (physical therapy), so necessary for this kind of injury, to return the limb to normal function?
Many patients seem to think that once the cast comes off the therapy is over when is is just beginning.
