Hi Dr Stoll and all,
I thot Id make it thru life without a bone break, but a flying fumble-fall ruined my record.
I broke my arm 2 wks ago, ulna near the elbow: doc put it in a sling, said it would heal with better range of motion if I didn't cast it. Seemed odd to me, but others are saying the same. I'm taking glucosamine sulfate and calcium and magnesium malate on my own, and moving it like the doc said. I asked if any other things I could do, and doc said he doesnt care whast else I did, that nutrionals wouldnt make any difference anyway. I used a bunch of poltices that all worked to eliminate the bruises (arnica gel, fresh comfrey in vinegar mashed up, various combination herbal rubs. ) They all worked. I science experimented by putting it on in diferent areas, since I had a fully black and blue arm to work on, and they all worked better than doing nothing. aching is making me tired. Any suggestions? How much should I be moving it by now? I can push it, I seem to have a high tolerance for pain, but should I? The doc seems to think that I need to push it to maintain full use of the arm when healed. Thanks a bunch

Deare Karen,
Did the break involve any of the articular surface? If so, this already bad break is even worse. Your doc should have explained this to you.
Everyone is right about not casting this. As a matter of fact, if it were casted, you might never regain the use of your elbow!
Isn't it interesting that the doc says nothing except what he has recommended will help when he has spent zero time learning anything else?
DMSO, applied topically will help the bruising even more & hasten the bone healing at the same time. Get a simple book about DMSO at the library and get some of the gel at the vet or the healthfood store.
If this were me, I would also be taking about 2000 milligrams of esterified vitamin C twice a day, 1000 units of vitamin E a day AND about 100 milligrams of zinc a day----along with what else you are taking. All three of these have been shown (by the very double blind studies so venerated by the AMA) to speed up any trauma
healing or post operative wounds. WHY is this not common knowledge by this doc who insists nothing else will work? Perhaps because they do not require a prescription????
Range of motion exercise is important for the good outcome of this fracture but you should NEVER force it. Only the muscles in that arm should be used until at least 4-6 weeks after the fracture. If your doc is not telling you this, you should ask a good physical therapist or a Physiatrist (the new medical specialty in this field of rehabilitation).
Let us know how you do.
Walt

I have several badly bruised and swolen toes from a fall and bought some liquid DMSO based on your recommendation here.
I did some web searching and see that it cannot be patented, so it will remain obscure even if it works wonders! Too Bad!
After reading all the warnings on the bottle, I nearly did not buy it: Caution! May cause skin irritation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, clothing. Wash thoroughly after handling. Expecially the part - Sold as a SOLVENT only! I guess that is necessary to avoid making HEALTH CLAIMS!
What I got is 99.9% pure DMSO, 90% DMSO, 10% distilled water. From my web reading, I saw where 90% results in the maximum absorbtion into the skin. So I apparently got the right stuff.
Is there a big difference between liquid and gel, except perhaps for convenience in application. Seems that it would soak in really fast, making the application method not too critical.
The health food store where I bought it had the liquid, gel, and roll-on. I bought the cheapest by the ounce. $12.79 for 8 fluid ounces. Ouch!
It made noticeable difference to my pain right after application. Of course, it's a short-term solution to help healing, not a a long-term cure, as I understand it.
So, thanks Walt, for mentioning this. It has helped a lot already-probably time for my second application :-) too bad they cannot put suggested use instructions on the bottle. Then I'd know how and when and were to use it-instead of having to go into "other worlds" to find out.

Dear RocketHealer Jim,
ANY concentration over 50% can cause skin irritation--even though irritation from 90% is very rare. To be absolutely sure you will have none of that, you would need to dilute it half and half with distilled water. The power of the AMA has greatly magnified any possible reaction to DMSO for just the reason you mentioned. The day will come when that organiation will no longer have the power to keep people sick for their own profit. DAMN! It just makes me mad!
Convenience is the only advantage of the gel. If you are careful to not waste it, you might get by cheaper with the liquid.
As much as you have purchased,it will likely last you for the rest of your life (used 2-3 times a day as recommended for something like bruising). That cost is miniscule compared to what any MD would prescribe.
Finally, DMSO costs about $1/gallon, retail, for medicinal grade. The only reason the price is as high as it is (that you had to pay) is because of the stupid regulations for something this safe that have been promoted by the medical monopoly.

Thanks Walt and RocketJim!
I forgot to mention that I was also using a LITTLE bit of DMSO: I mixed it into one of the ointments I was using. Thanks! and I needed the reminder for the extra zinc c and e . It is 16 days since the break (it is the bad break on the articular surface) and ALL bruising is gone since about 3 days (I was completely bruised black from above the elbow to into my palm on both sides of my arm. At the checkup this am Doc Ron said he was amazed at how much use I had of it. He said time to toss the sling. I am typing this TWO handed. I wasn't so thrilled because I couldn't get my arm completely straight yet, but he was. I shared with him the science experiment with the concoctions for the pain and bruising etc and he was receptive but not effusive. What did I expect?
I did kind of like the guy: I demanded to see the initial xrays along side of the current xray before he came into the room, and his staff even helped me put the films on the screen, so he was a bit edgy when he walked in and I told him I was real disapointed in the xray cause they were the same as the first time. We got a little testy, and he said he treats the patient not the xray, and that I was already ahead of the process with the good range & use. Good to have a sense of the absurd, I mean humor/us.
The tiredness continues, but it is less than it was. He gave me some exercises to do today. I believe the word you were looking for for the new specialty, Dr Stoll was not PHYSIATRIST but PHYSICAL TERRORIST. Anyway, I want to own the record for healing this break fast and well. Thanks for the help and sunshine!

Dear Karen,
If you keep up what you have been doing, EVERYONE will be "amazed" at your progress. Perhaps some of them might even finally ask you what you have been doing and help others of their patients to get the same results?????
I would agree with your doc about your progress!!!!

Dear Cliff,
I hope everyone with chronic conditions will go to the library & read up on the DMSO scandal. It DOES work for many different conditions and is almost totally non-toxic.
The main reason it is not routinely recommended by docs I have finally come up with is not flattering to the conventional medical system. DMSO is too inexpensive and can be recommended by non-MDs. This is "competition" for the monopoly which is intolerable.
What size bottle and what % concentration for the $8.50?

Dear Robin,
DiMethylSulfoxone (DMSO). The first (and so far as I know, still, the only) substance known that will penetrate the skin as though it is not there AND carry anything mixed with it along.
This property has some interesting benefits and several incurable conditions are treated successfully with this stuff. MANY chronic conditions are benefitted and it is so safe that it is available over the counter.
Because it is so safe that it does not require a prescription (and is so inexpensive) the medical monopoly has tried to ignore it and poo-pooh its benefits. It can be found in most healthfood stores and at your veterinarian (as it has been used by vets for many years).
Go to your library and have the librarian find you a recent book about it.
THEN, share what you learn with the rest of us on this BB.
Namaste` Walt
