A friend of mine has a low platelet count that causes him to bruise easily. He's been told that a car wreck could be very bad news for him. Is there anything nutritionally that can be done to protect the body from this condition? Thanks.

Hi, Nancy.
Low platelets ALWAYS have a cause. What is his?
Low platelets are most commonly caused by the same things that cause other blood elements to be too low (like aplastic anemia).
Go to the glossary, archives and search engine for information about this process.
Let me know what HIS cause is.

Thanks so much for your quick reply. Do you mean to search the archives for low platelet count? I don't know if he knows what the cause is, but he will ask the doctor for a diagnosis and cause the next time he goes.

After reading archives about aplastic anemia, I don't think he has that, but on the subject of bruising, the bioflavinoild look like a possible solution. Can lack of bioflavinoids cause low platelet count?

Hi, Nancy.
NO. My first question was whether his doc has any idea what is causing this? If not, THEN, he needs to read the link to the archives I have prepared below.
THEN, if he has any questions, have him write again.

Nancy,
Of course he does not (YET) have aplastic anemia. It is just that low platelets are frequently the first sign of that slippery slope and now would be the best time to DO something aobut the causes. IF he has had a decent workup, and still the docs have no reason for his problem, MCS is his most likely cause.
Bioflavinoids have to do with the integirty of the arteriole and capillary wals NOT the platelet formation. Capillary wall integrity is one of the causes of bruising and low platelets are another. Once the low platelets have been substantiated (as I am assuming is the case here) the problem is MUCH more severe than just poor wall integrity and he has to do something about the cause.
Hope this straightens this out since bioflavinoids has nothing to do with this. That does not mean that he may not see temproary benefit by using bioflavinoids (in the bruising but NOT in his platelet count) since he may have BOTH poor wall integrity AND low platelets.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. I understand exactly what you're saying. If MCS (that's multiple chemical sensitivity, right?) is at the root of the low platelet count, and he begins a wellness program, then he could spontaneously get better, correct? He is in very good physical shape because he exercises faithfully on a treadmill and with weights every day, but he does have hypoglycemia, which is under control, and he used to have high blood pressure, which he no longer has. He does consume a good bit of alcohol and does not eat many veggies, etc. I'm trying to work on his wife to improve their diet.

I don't think I have the heart to show him this quite yet. It looks very bleak. I have copied my relaxation tapes for him and he's used them, but not nearly every day. His stress level is very low, though, because he has an easy job and he's very happily married, etc, with small children whom he thoroughly enjoys. I'd hate to give him information that would in and of itself stress him out. I'm going to try to help him see the need for a better diet, I think. He will get the dx from the dr next time he goes.
