Strange indentation in head two years after accident.

Two years ago I was in a car accident in Montana. We were in a van, and I was looking out the passenger window at a horse in a nearby field when a speeding car hit us at 40 mph. We were at almost a stop. My head hit the window, and it knocked me out for a few seconds. I don't actually remember the point of impact. I was taken by ambulance to the hospital, with damage to my neck, and a gash in my head where it hit the glass. The strange thing was, they only x-rayed my back & neck. They never x-rayed my head. I had a massive headache for almost two weeks, and was told it was from the stiffness in my neck. My gash in my head gradually healed up, but left an actual indentation in my hairline that was over an inch long. Now, when I touch it, I feel a weird sensation in the back of my head. Also, the indentation has gradually gotten bigger, and now runs from my hairline, down to my nose. It is dark, and shows up well in the mirror. It doesn't hurt, except for when I brush my hair, directly touch it, or lift my eyebrows. Is it possible that a possible skull fracture was overlooked at the time of the crash, and could be getting worse now? It seems like it would have healed by now if that is what it was, but this dent and the pain that goes along with it is quite bothersome. Any thoughts?

I am certainly no expert on this but it almost does sound like a fracture that has gotten larger. I would see a doctor PRONTO...this can't be good

Hi, sarahw.

This is unlikely to have come from a fracture. Certainly not one that is "getting larger".

What likely happened is that the doc in the ER was not careful to close all of the layers that were cut at the site of the scalp laceration. There is the skin, the fascia, the muscle and the covering (periosteum) over the bone. Apparently, in YOUR case all of them were cut.

If he has just explored the wound (routine) he would have seen bare bone and would, then, have known that he had a bigger job than the skin. The wound should have been closed in the functional layers described above. He just closed the skin.

NOW, you are going to need plastic surgery to stop it from becoming disfiguring.

Let us know what you learn and how you do. This is NOT life threatening--only progressively disfiguring.
