I fractured my humerus in a skiing accident about 7 weeks ago. It is a spiral fracture the whole length of the bone so it was put into a hanging cast to try and straighten it and avoid an operation. No callousing appears to be forming according to x-rays. Is it too early to be seeing anything or whould I start to be worried? I can feel that it hasn't knitted together in the lower part and am constantly worried that I am moving it incorrectly. A new cast has bee put on that allows me to move it from the elbow but there is quite a bit of pain above the elbow when I try to. Any ideas on the timeframe this kind of fracture takes to heal? When should I know when/if an operation is going to be necessary?

Hi, Melanie.
This should have been healed by now. It was treated correctly but when it should have been HEALED "it shows no callus forming"???
Your doc should be immediately putting the DC trickle charge (external little machine you wear that Robert Becker, MD developed years ago for "non-union" of fractures) unit on your arm. It has been standard therapy for years for tibial fractures--one of the most difficult fractures to heal.
At least it should be tried for 6 weeks before considering putting a rod in your humerous.
If your doc says he has not heard of this, you are going to the wrong doc and need one who practices 21st century medicine.
Let us know what you learn.

Dear Dr. Stoll,
Thanks for taking the time to comment on this. I'm not dealing with the doctor in my native language which is why I'm not sure of exact medical terms but I definitely understood when he stood there shaking his head when I went for a checkup a couple of days ago. The upper part of the fracture hasn't healed at all and the gap beween them seems quite wide. He did mention the Becker Machine but seemed to think that it may not show any real effect considering there has been nothing in the past 9 weeks. They're talking again about dropping a rod into it so I've decided to go back to my home country and have it seen to there. Hopefully this can be fixed quickly and successfully as I don't think I can stand one more day of this cast!! Thanks again for your information - it was a very valuable service for me. I'll keep you posted of any interesting developments...

Hi, Melanie.
Since the Becker Machine cannot POSSIBLY do any harm, and a "rod" is fraught with MANY serious problems, if it were me, I would at least try it first! You can always do the rod if it does not work.
Be sure you see someone who is familiar with the Becker Machine so they know what to expect.
Let us know what happens.
