Bowel Changes ( Your book was very informative) TY

Posted by Laurel [6.497] on April 08, 2005 at 07:46:56:

I'm in my late 40's and have noticed changes in my stools/bowel habits. It seems certain things I consume seem to make my stool soft or mushy, but most of the time the stool is hard with sometimes severe straining.
Today I had 'the urge', sat down, pushed a little and expelled soft formed stool. (Yesterday I had just gone a very small amount). Then I pushed agaimn and it was rounded soft pellets. But I still felt like something BIG was there. I strained and pushed for 5 mins. or so and a couple of egg sized hard stool along with soft formed stool came out. But what a relief I felt. What could be going on here to make the stool alternate from soft to hard in the same movement and also straining to get even soft stool out? About 5 mins. after I went, I had very sharp pains in the anus and also sharp pain right in my pubic mound.
I am re-reading your book again because I'm sure I missed a lot of good information. Thank you for sharing your medical expertise with us.

Hi laurel. Yes you are right, Dr. Stoll wrote a fantastic book. I keep it close at hand as a reference. I have been able to relieve my costochondritis thanks to Dr. Stoll's advice (no flare ups in 1 years and Ive had it since 1998) and I'm working on my bowel habits which have improved greatly. Straining was an almost every day occurence for me for the last 10+ years. Luckily I suffered with 1 hemorrhoid, no anal fissures and just a teeny tiny spot of blood, more than likely fora a teeny tiny tear, but definately not serious, a one time thing. But if I continued down this road of destruction, I'm sure I would have been MUCH worse. What you post about sounds similar to what I dealt with last summer during the end of my straining days, to the pint of getting head pain may I add. Not a GOOD thing. Certain foods now tend to irriatae me also, if I overdo with sauces, gravies, chocolate I do usually go a few times a day and its mushy, but as Dr. Stoll has said, mushy stool is good. But last summer I had 2 small hard bm's in 2 days. The 3rd day I was gassy and thought I'd try to go. I remember it like it was yesterday. So of course I did the usual straining bit and out comes what looked like baby snakes. Hmmm. I proceeded to strain again looked like rabbit turd. HMMM. This is all in one sitting mind you. So I got off the jon, made some coffee, thought I'd see if I had anymore stool up there, there was no urge. Again I STRAINED it actually felt like I had a brick in my butt, well out pops these HUGE rocks. I can't tell you how good I felt after these were out. It felt like I lost 5 lbs. in my anus. A couple hours later I went in to urinate and the pressure I think from urinationg caused small leakage of fecal matter on the toilet paper. So I thought damn there must be more. So I pushed again, and small soft hunks came out, so after researching I believe this soft stool was around this massive hard mass. Could this be true Dr. Stoll? After that day I said to myself, that's it, things are going to change. So I have upped my water intake, eat more fruit, I drink 1 glass of apple juice a day, the juice helped me a lot of my constipation days. I am doing better. Once in a GREAT while I will have to push, but pushing and straining are two different things!!! I think. Dr. Stoll's book also helped me to do things the right way, and not just my bowel problem. I now exercise, I have always eaten right, I live on a lake and all the ice melted off 3 days ago and I have already been out paddling strengthening my legs. Read his book a few more times Laurel, meanwhile I hope the members of this board and Dr. Stoll give you some good advice. Best of luck to you.

try sipping at a tall glass of green tea in the morning as you move around and get ready for your day. At some point you'll feel an urgency, and everything should slip right out. It's best not to strain.

ANN mentioned a glass of green tea, likewise for the juice of a lemon in a big glass of warm water (as warm as you can take it), taken first thing in the morning, at least a half hour before eating. It brings on "the urge".
