...for lack of a better description :o)
I have had this problem for a couple of years now. It started when I first began my SR sessions. My right eyelid would twitch (in the upper/inner corner towards the bridge of my nose) while trying to keep my eyes closed. It gradually became like a pressure behind the eye along with numbness and tingling that goes down my face and up across the eyelid (only on the right side at this point) along with occasional eye pain. A year ago I had an MRI of the brain with contrast which turned out (you guessed it) negative. (Why was I not surprised?) So, I lived with it until about a month ago, when the symptoms intensified (I had a very stressful month at work). I now have this same sensation (numbness/tingling) on the left side of my face right on the top of my cheekbone, and sometimes the pain is pretty bad and will turn into a headache (I've also had migraines since I was a kid, although I don't get many of them anymore). I went to an opthamologist at the advice of my chelation Dr., and he referred me to a neuroopthomologist. He looked in my eye, and saw nothing wrong. He asked me a few questions about my headaches and proceeded to write a prescription for Amitryptilin. I had never heard of it, and he proclaimed it to be perfectly safe in the dosage he prescribed for this type of problem. He actually gave the diagnosis a name (something that's foreign to me): Migraine Variant Syndrome. Sounds impressive doesn't it? Well, I asked him to expound on that, and he pretty much told me that he wasn't sure about the cause, but that the medication should help. I asked him if this was a cure, and he didn't know (big surprise). So I walked out with prescription in hand and had it filled (It was only $3.90.) To my utter disbelief (although I shouldn't have been surprised) I find out that this is an anti-depressant. I was incensed to say the very least. I know this is long, so I'll just end it by asking what else could this possibly be? I'm doing my SR TWICE per day (since 5/17/02) exercising (just began my rebounding again) and watching my diet. Thanks for all your help.

Congratulations, Joanie.
I am glad that you found out on your own that this is an anti-depressant with a sedative side effect. Doctors do this when they know it is a result of the stored stress-effect in the hypothalamus but do not want to spend the time to explain this mechanism to the patient.
This is a sure symptom of this and SR is your only permanent solution. Let us know how you do.

Thanks Walt. I understand about the bracing, been a student for two years now, but would you please briefly explain what exactly is happening inside my head that causes these symptoms? Are my muscles pressing on nerves or something along those lines? Thanks again.

Thanks, Joanie.
"Migraine Varient Syndrome" indeed! What gobbledegook we MDs get away with!
Try an experiment: Stand up straight and hold one arm straight out to your side. Pretend there is a terrorist standing in front of you holding a shotgun on you. If you drop your arm he will fire.
When you cannot stand the pain any more you will drop your arm and you will be dead. This is what happens to the muscles of the head and neck if you are unconsciously bracing those muscles.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Walt. So is it the tensed muscles that I'm feeling, or the nerves being aggravated by the tensed muscles? I always thought that tingling/numbness was nerve related.

Joanie.
Tense muscles pinch nerves.
