Dear Dr. Stoll,
There is a tenderness in my vaginal walls, in a couple of small areas, when I insert or press a finger against the area, and also after intercourse, unless there has been lots (an unusual amount) of lubrication. I have been thoroughly checked by my gynecologist, who says everything is normal, except that there was a tear in the vaginal tissue on the posterior fourchette. ??? Do you think the internal pressure could be related to bracing the vagina unconciously throughout the day. I have started paying attention to this and I think it may be the culprit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The soreness goes away after a day or so...as I am in a long distance relationship, the intimacy comes in "doses."
I am twenty-nine years old, btw, and athletic.
Thanks,
Belle

Hi Belle,
I don't have an answer for you except to say that I've experienced this myself. And there are probably many other women out there that have too. So your not alone. I'm curious to see what Dr. Stoll says about this.

Congratulations, Belle.
You have already put your finger on the most common cause of what you are experiencing: chronic bracing of the levator ani. The small tear your doc found is also most commonly caused by this exact same mechanism.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your confirmation. I have read the information about bracing and am going to begin the skilled relaxation. Do I also need to do specific vaginal muscle relaxation. (I know that sounds right to me, but I'm curious about your opinion too.) Maybe I could do muscle relaxation at a separate time of day, when I am alone. When I flex the muscles inside it is the exact location of the pain after sex.
Thank you for this forum!

Hi, Belle.
Specific vaginal relaxation can be done with a biofeedback vaginal probe, which most trainers would not have, and you would get quicker results. See the biofeedback archives for the "U-Control" device people if you are interested.
Total body relief of bracing will quickly (month or so) get you in touch with what you have been doing and then focusing on the area might work quickly too.
Let us know how you do.
