GERD and throat pain

I started getting pain in my lower throat, below the Adam's apple and in that little depression just above your clavicles. The pain feels as if it's in the front of the neck and if I push inside that little V made by those neck tendons I feel that is where it is. I have seen an ENT who said everything looked normal on my cords etc. using a fiber-optic scope. I don't have the classic heartburn pain in the stomach or chest. When I wake in the morning, I generally feel just fine with no throat discomfort but rest assured it will come later in the day. Can you reflux up to your throat while being upright all day? If this is laryngopharyngeal reflux, why don't I have problems with my voice? I don't taste acid in the back of my throat, I don't regurgitate food and I don't feel as if any food is sticking. In addition, the discomfort pretty much lasts all day. If you've refluxed into your throat, isn't the pain supposed to be transient? I would think 4 hours after you've eaten there's no more acid so why does it continue to irritate. Other things I've felt on occasion: sometimes feel like there is air and I need to burp but nothing is there, occasionally have a feeling of chest congestion, no pain, just a slight discomfort, I have to clear my throat quite a bit sometimes because I can feel fluid accumulating somewhere in there. I can clear it but it comes back. This happens sometimes without having eaten anything and was present before the throat pain began (sometimes when a lot accumulates it will affect my voice to the point that I have to clear it or my voice will sound funny). Anyways, before searching the net I was put on Aciphex and I STILL would get that discomfort in the throat. Usually it lasts 2-3 days and then I have 2-3 clear days. Anyone with help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, anyone with similar symptoms please reply. Once again, it seems very strange that I have no heartburn symptoms yet have this persistent throat irritation. Thanks in advance for help. Don = ddoveatt@osius.com

Hi, Don.

This is called "pharyngospasm" & is a lot more connected to bracing than to gastric acid.

The solution is to understand the process and to eliminate bracing (see the archives).

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt
