Dr. Stoll,
I've been practicing wellness for a couple of years. Last year I gave up all dairy and all grains for two months and that feeling of reflux in my throat went away. After that I've kept my grain and dairy intake to only sprouted grain bread and kefir (although occasionally I would cheat with other breads). The reflux problem never returned, but I continued to have major sinus problems and some fatigue problems. About a week ago I decided to give up all grains again to see if my sinuses would clear up. During the middle of last week I learned I was going to have to give a presentation, something I hate doing and have not had to do in a long time. Just learning of this news made me very anxious. My stomach was gurgling, I had increased gas, and then a couple of days later, after an 8 month absence, I started having that feeling of reflux again. I decided to give up the kefir a couple of days ago just to make sure it wasn't from that, but my gut feeling is that this anxiety caused this setback with the reflux. Oddly enough, my sinuses suddenly seem better (these problems have always been cyclical, but the reflux has never gone away for so long). I thought it was gone for good. Seeing how I was on the perfect whole foods diet, doing twice daily SR, and getting plenty of exercise, it is extremely disappointing to have this reflux come back.
Now I'm wondering if I have not been doing as well as I thought with my meditation. I was confident I was doing well since I get so incredibly relaxed when I meditate, my body almost always feels as if it is melting away. I've seen many benefits from this SR and enjoy it. I'm more calm, have much less anger, am more spiritual, and am certainly healthier than I was two years ago, but it's obvious I didn't handle this latest anxiety provoking news. Can I still be bracing after two years of meditation? I live in the boondocks and am about 5 hours away from a city that offers biofeedback, and right now I couldn't afford to see one anyway. Can one stop bracing and still have a setback from an anxiety provoking situation, or is this a sign I've been bracing all along? And if it's bracing/anxiety that caused this sudden return of reflux, then am I doing any good by giving up my kefir and sprouted grain bread?
Thanks,
Leif

Thanks, Leif.
I would purchase a used GSR on the internet and when I was through with it sell it. That certainly would cost you a lot less than the trip you are describing. This is where I would start.
HOWEVER, remember that bracing is but one indication of stress effects on the system. For example, the GSR directly checks the autonomic nervous system.
Obviously you also have a hypersensitivity response to some grain proteins. I would try TOTAL elimination of the things you know you respond to. Sprouting will not prevent this response. Probiotics might also help since LGS has to be part of this problem.
It is apparent that you have helped yourself. However, your story is a good example that wellness is a lifetime commitment and, even though symptoms are gone, study needs to go on.
Hope this helps.
Let us know what you learn.
