Lump in throat / swollen lymph node?

Posted by
David on December 02, 2002 at 16:11:06:

For the past month I had a cold and then a soar throat.
Now the cold is gone and also the soar throat but I have
now noticed (and felt) a lump in my throat. You can't feel
it. It only effect my swallowing.

Over the past few days I have awoken to find it has
almost disappared but after breakfast (or swallowing) it
come back (I can feel the 'lump in the throat' feeling.

Along with this 'lump' feeling in the throat, I have first an
itching and then a burning of the skin on my sternum
over the area where I feel the lump in my throat. From
time to time over the past year I've had that itchy feeling
on my sternum but it's gotten markedly worse with this
'lumpy throat' feeling.

I have scheduled an appointment for a blood test. Is
there anything else that I need to know? Has anyone
else had similar symptoms? Thanks much!

David

David,
If you had a growth on your vocal chords, it would feel like there's somthing in your throat when you swallow. Is your voice hoarse?
The sternum is the bone in the center of your chest. Do you mean the skin on your throat itches over the larynx (voice box)?
Your doctor can examine your throat to see if anything is visable. I'll be interested to know if he finds anything.

Hi, David.

The most likely diagnosis is "globus hystericus" since both that and your likely costochondritis (as well as your possible GERD) are caused by bracing. Always look for the common denominator. Few people have more than one thing going on at the same time.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt
