Still Numb

Posted by Southern Gal on December 26, 2002 at 17:44:43:

I had a protrusion for the past 8 years of the L5S1 disc, and avoided surgery, as the pain was not so severe that I could not handle it. That was prior to 2/2002. Then the situation progressed to the point that my bottom was completely numb. I could tell when I had to take care of nature's call, but I was numb. After having an MRI done and visiting a neurosurgeon, his recommendation was to get it taken care of now, whether by him, or someone else. He did not want me wasting time, as the numbness could potentially become permenant. I had surgery 3/3/2002. I am still having numbness, and often my lower spine just plain aches and hurts. Is this normal 9 months after surgery? When I complaint to my doctor, he wanted me to go to physical therapy, but honestly, I am in a job that does not allow me the luxury of that time. I have went from and active, busy 40 year old woman, to someone who goes to work and home to sit on a heating pad! Please give me your advise.

Hi, Southern.

What have you done about your bracing?

Walt

I do not have any bracing. There was only severe pain at first which subsided, and then only came really bad once or twice a year for the last 8 years. Then the numbness. I hope I have not confused something.

Hi Southern Gal,

You can read about bracing in the glossary, and the article about Skilled Relaxation for the remedy.

Best wishes,

Thanks, Southern.

How do you know you are not bracing?

I said that too 30 years ago until my Rolfer showed me I was bracing terribly. That was when I began to get well.

No one can tell if they are bracing until it begins to go away.

By far the most common cause of your historical symptoms is progressive bracing.

Let us know what you experience.

Walt
