I've had ear cracking when I yawn and swallow for as long as I can remember. Last year when I got a sinus infection I've had two more incedence with my ears. The second time, which was in July 2002, no sinus infection was diagnosed but I had fluid in them, dizziness (off balance not spinning), short shooting pain in ears mostly the right one, head pains in temples and back lower right side of head (short not long lasting),and a weird vibrating feeling in my head like my brain was shaking or something which only happened once. About a week ago I got that same head vibrating feeling like a "brain shaking" feeling across the back bottom of my skull (cerebellum area) and sometimes I got this feeling in both of my temples. This time it happened several times on and off. A few days later I started getting a little dizzy (off balance not spinning),then the ear pain (again mostly the right ear), and if while sitting I put my head down and looked left or right it felt like a pulling/heavy feeling in the back of my neck and in the cerebellum area. I went to family doc. and she said there was no ear fulid or infection that she could see but gave me zyrtec and flonase because my nose was a little stuffed up just in case to clear anything up she might have not been able to see. When I told her about the vibrating "brain shaking" feeling in the cerebellum area of my head she didn't seem to have a clue what I was talking about. I have read others speak of brain shaking or vibratin head feeling at other boards though not related to ear problems but no one has any ideas as to what causes it. Since I've been to see her I've got some fullness in my ears and face which wasn't present when I first saw her. She did have me get a brain CT scan to check on what might be causing the dizziness. I haven't got those results yet. I still think all this might have something to do with my ears or sinuses even though I've never had my sinuses checked. The zyrtec and flonase are helping with the dizziness and stuffy nose since I've been taking them for 6 days now. I was on the zyrtec and flonase the second ear incident and they cleared everything up over time. As I mentioned I constantly have ear cracking but when I get like this it's more like a hollow cracking than a crisp cracking like it usually is. What could be causing the constant ear cracking even when I don't have ear problems? Also, could my ear problems make me get that head vibration feeling? Thanks for any information!

Hi N.
I used to have what I think is a similar vibrating, but for me it was not only in the head but could happen anywhere in the body.
For me it was caused by nervous system overload. The way I resolved it was to: decrease stress, do full body stretching, and follow the advice of doing the three-legged stool on this website. The instructions are on the article in the home page "How to be Healthy." You must follow them exactly.
The other thing that helped me was reading the book, "The Highly Sensitive Person" by Elaine Aron.
My guess about your situation is the ear and sinus stuff is all related to the vibrations -- it is probably all caused by bracing which is resolved by the practice of skilled relaxation (see that article).
It is okay to have it checked out for other causes, but I suspect that the resolution will come by Practicing Wellness (the Three-Legged Stool).
In my work as a massage therapist, I have learned that conditions that affect the ear (tinnitus and dizziness) are often related to tight muscles in the neck, shoulders, and face. So you might consider trying some focused massage sessions to see if that alleviates your symptoms right away. However, it is not a permanent resolution -- Practicing Wellness is.
Best wishes,
Happygal (Certified Massage Therapist)

I'll be sure to check out the article. I can't believe I forgot to mention that I get anxiety attacks. I take xanax as needed for them. They seem to get much worse at that time of the month. I will be the first to admit that I'm too "in tune" with my body which is a big one for anxious people. What you said makes alot of sense. Thank you for enlightening me on that.

Have you read the TMJ archives? If it is TMJ, don't bother going to a dentist who will charge $125 to tell you to take anti-inflammatories and use a heating pad. Some people here have found chiroprators helpful and the things Happygal suggested.

Hi, N.
Listen to Sakkly and Happygal. Go to the bracing (glossary), the TMJ and the ear archives.
It is perfectly obvious to me that this is severe bracing of the head and neck muscles and that TMJ, nearly always eventually precipitated by chronic bracing, is already present.
In my opinion, this totally unnecessary condition is only present because of the intentional ignorance of your physicians. This info has been known for at least 20 years.
Let us know what you learn and how you do. You can be our "poster child" for the resolution of this condition!

Thank you Walt and everyone who replied to my post. I've never thought of bracing causing all this uncomfortable stuff. I still get a little off balance and some head pain bouncing around and it's making me miserable. I do suffer from anxiety attacks which I've got on top of all this so I'm sure I'm tense without even knowing it. Sometimes I catch myself holding my head a certain way without moving it for some time and then I can feel the relief in my neck when I do move it. I started exercising today to help with any stress so I'm on the right track. I'm going to see a "new" doctor on Friday. I'm not comfortable with the one I've been seeing. She's only good if you want a med. then she's whipping out the prescription pad.
P.S. I'd love to be your poster child...hehe.
