Anyone with back pain --- please read

Posted by LE on March 02, 2003 at 10:42:38:

Hi,

I suffered with excrutiating back pain for ten years and did not sustain any type of injury. It simply appeared and I was young when it began. I tried every modality and of course massage is always wonderful and helpful - but my FINAL answer in addition was --- a video called --- SAY GOODBYE TO BACK PAIN.

It is an older video and can be found online. It was/is the program that the YMCA uses and was established by a pioneer called, Hans Kraus. It is so incredibly simple and has worked absolute miracles for myself, family and friends.

I truly hope, anyone that has back pain will give this simple set of stretches and exercises, a chance. It is difficult, as one becomes cynical but I promise if you try it, you will be amazed. If it helps you, please share the information with others.

Lauren

Hi - though I have a pod issue right now, in the other departments, I'm pretty good - so here is advice from a personal trainer/pilates trainer regarding back pain. Most back pain is usually due (unless from a serious accident) to weak back and ab muscles. In turn, one must have HEALTHY muscles which mean that the muscles have elasticity, which means, stretch. Any slow movements which incorporate stretching with muscle-building will usually aid in both short term and long term back pain.
I have more people that seek my services for training/pilates that have had back injuries or just weak backs - from mild to severe problems. On needs to remember that the shoulders and neck are a part of the back - as well as abs. If you have flabby abs, sooner or later, you will most likey suffer a "bad back" issue. It's just common sense.

Is that John Sarno's method?

No, Dr. John Sarno's approach is that muscle pain and allergies are caused by repressed rage in the unconscious mind. As a diversionary tactic, the unconscious mind causes pain through oxygen reduction to the muscles, tendons or nerves, in an attempt to keep unpleasant thoughts from coming to the surface. He believes that through education of what is going on in your mind, that pain issues can be resolved without medication or surgery. He believes the main culprit is STRESS. I agree, and Skilled Relaxation can make the difference, although he refers to it as "meditation". It's a different slant than Dr. Stoll's approach, but I believe it has real merit. Sarno says stretching, massage, prolotherapy, chiropractic, supplementation, etc. are unecessary and just reinforce the negative actions of the unconscious mind. His mantra is: "Think Psychological, not Physical."
Try it, it works.
