Umbilical Hernia Repair

Posted by Donna on August 02, 2003 at 08:46:40:

Dr. Stoll, I have emailed you before on this chronic left side pain that I have had for about 3 years...I am an female, overweight, type 2 diabeties, and high blood pressure, have been thru 2 CT's, barium enema, barim swallow, and a laproscopic surgery, all the dr's, were looking for pain coming from diverticulits, which I have the diverticular, but not infected...on these severe attacks of pain I have once a month usually at the same time, so I was thinking endo, but my gyn dr said no, nothing wrong with female organs, but later he wanted to put me on those Depo Prevro shots to see if it would stop the pain, well medical dr said no, she wanted me to see and GI specialist, which I did, and I was having one of those severe attacks, and he said all my pain was coming from this umbilical hernia I had, so he sent me to a surgeon, who repaired it on July 10th, as of today I am still draining from the surgery,..I had 3 surgeons before this one to tell me they would not do this surgery because I would not heal, and the hernia would come back...well anyway the surgery is done, and the pain in left side is back...any suggestions could this be female related, as the pain is in lower left side, or just what could it be....all the test I have had showed up nothing but this hernia, and the pockets of diverticular...

I too have an umbilical hernia and was wondering a couple of things. Was the reason drs said you would not heal the diabetes? Also, why did they think the hernia would come back because I have one that I know I've had for 20 yrs. because it has been protruding for that long since my first pregancy and I've been thinking that maybe I should have it repaired????

Hi, Me.

If I were you I would get it repaired. It really is a pretty simple operation (unless you are grossly overweight).

Are you sure this is not diastasis recti and is not an umbilical hernia? That is what pregnancy most commonly causes.

Thanks, Donna.

I would bet that if you became normal weight, this pain would soon disappear--at least then a masseur, or Rolfer, could do something about it. The very fact that the doc even considered that it might be your hernia says that he knows it is related to muscle spasm in the wall of your abdomen.

The fact that you had the hernia repaired and you still have the pain proves that it was not the hernia.

With all that you have had done, everything else has been ruled out or I could not be so definite about it.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Dr. Stoll, I've thought it was a hernia because the only symptoms I have are my navel protrudes and sometimes becomes sore. Is there any way for me to know the difference?

Hi, Me.

Any competent physician could tell in less than a minute simply by looking and palpating the area. Since the treatment is very similar and determined at surgery, I do not think it is a big deal to know the exact diagnosis prior to surgery.
