Back Problems

I have suffered back problems off and on. Three weeks ago I went to a massage therapist (Actually for my hip, not my back,-- My back was doing pretty well) She was pressing very hard(and I mean VERY hard) on the muscles in my lower back. Supposedly to release knots. It hurt so much I jumped from the pain. Ever since my back has been killing me and I am even having a hard time walking sometimes. I have never had so much pain in my lower back. I am very concerned. Years ago I had made an agreement with myself not to let bodyworkers do any thing invasive, because I have a very sensitive body. I slipped up and allowed this person to do bodywork that was painful. I hope there is no permanent damage. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Jean...sorry to hear about your back problem. Some years ago I suffered almost the same problem...lower back hurt, my right hip hurt and sometimes my right leg felt numb. I had a C.A.T. scan done and was diagnosed with a herniated disc. They wanted to operate and remove the piece that was pushing on the nerve which was causing the pain. I didn't allow them as I heard somewhere if you lay down on a flat surface like the floor for about six weeks or more your spine would eventually straighten it's self out and the disc would return back to normal. I did this and 20 years later I have had no problems since. Mind you, it wasn't easy...you have to think in terms of 24/7 as they say and lay on the floor as much in a 24 hour period as possible. You can lay flat on your back or rotate and lay on either side as long as the surface is hard and flat. Give it a try for a week and see if you don't start to feel some relief...I bet you do:)

It sounds to me like you have a huge chronic back problem that was simply brought to your attention by the therapist's work. I have no doubt that she was trying to release knots (pressure works well to release knots for many people). So at least you may have learned that you have a big problem, and that pressure isn't going to release it for you.

The overview is you may need to see both a chiropractor and a massage therapist to untangle this, and you are going to have to start doing daily practices to take care of your back problem, including things like stretching and exercising those muscles that are prone to tightness. Since you have a history of back pain, don't take this suggestion of daily care lightly. You need to be working on your back every day to keep it in a healthy state, or face the alternative -- you can expect continued problems in the future.

Here are a few options for your consideration. Have you used heat or muscle creams (tiger balm) to try to get some immediate relief?

About the massage, one option is to call or go back to that theraist and tell her what happened, and see if she has another way to help you work with the situation. Another option is to call or go to a different therapist and do the same. In either case, don't forget to be more communicative about your needs (sounds like you already know that).

A chiropractor might also be of great help.

Check with your MT or chiropractor to see if they can teach you daily care for your back. Another good option is to go to the library and look for books about back pain. Good books can often tell you what lifestyle changes you will need to make to take care of yourself, and what stretches might help, etc.

Since you are so sensitive and pressure doesn't work, it might take a little longer to unwind this problem, so look for slow, steady progress.

The other thing you can do to help yourself is to start doing SR (see glossary and article) on a daily basis. It will be of great benefit over the long term, although it will take a while to see the results. SR needs to be done in addition to all the things I've mentioned above.

Most health food stores and even most pharmacies. Even Wal Mart sells it now -- at least around here.

I agree totally with Happygal.

You are going to have to get rid of your bracing before this is resolved and the longer you allow it to go on the longer it will take you to get rid of it.

Jean...I slept on the floor, I watched tv on the floor, I read on the floor. Like I said, think 24/7...I got use to it after awhile and every spare minute I was on the floor. I know it sounds silly but there is nothing silly when your in pain...:(
