Dear Dr. Stoll - I am a 47 year old woman and over the past few years my legs have ached. They mainly bother me when I go to bed at night. It's not an ache like I injured them. It's an ache deep inside. It is particularly strong in my knees and my feet but does extend to about mid thigh. I actually have always had achy knees but not to this degree and it was usually around my periods. My mother also had the achy knees. I don't think its restless leg syndrome, which is what doctors have said when I bring it up. I thought I had read that rls causes a creepy crawling sensation that makes you want to move your legs. For me, the only thing that temporarily relieves the discomfort is to do leg stretches, and bouncing my legs in bed. However, as soon as I stop it comes right back. I think doctors have thought rls because I told them about the leg bouncing. I have always tried to avoid taking ibuprofen type products, but lately it's the only way I can get to sleep. I try to do stretching, rebounding and (lately) some swimming during the day or early evening. I would appreciate any ideas you might have that might help this problem. Thank you.

Hi, Lilia.
This is a common varient of RLS.
You need to try to increase you intracellular magnesium (see the magnesium archives and the RLS archives).
You have to DO the SR and underwater exercises, not TRY to do them.
Just the series of deep, total body, therapeutic massages, 3 times a week, for 2 weeks handrunning, will resolve this totally for about a month without your doing anything else. This experience will also prove to you what is going on so you do not have to dilute your efforts.
As you have already learned, rebounding, stretching and exercise helps you the most but you have to do it as recommended to get permanent results.\
Let us know how you do.
Walt

I have had a few leg and knee problems and cod liver oil
and Nature's Bounty Glucosamine/Chondroitin and Natrol
MSM has fixed the knee problems and zinc and the herb,
Gotu Kola has solved the leg problems. The different items
have helped different problems. I had 2 different pains in
one knee. One sharp and one dull and next to each other.
Leg pains were severe aches from walking or the cold and
another was a tingling, heavy feeling.
