Hello,
I have had difficulty yawing and breathing for a couple of years now.
It started when I was driving home from work in Jan 2002. I couldn't seem to get out a full yawn. The feeling of a yawn would come on, I would start to inhale like I was about to yawn, but just when you would expect your body to push out the yawn, it doesn't happen. The yawn is left incomplete, and I am left with the feeling of still having to yawn. (basically it's like taking a deep breath as opposed to a yawn, you know the difference.) On this particular drive home, my cheeks and mouth had sort of a tingling sensation when I got home from trying to complete yawns. I think this was because my mouth was open so wide the whole ride home trying to yawn.
Ever since that day(almost 2 years), it's been extremely hard for me to get out a yawn. I will sometimes struggle for an hour, constantly feeling like I have to yawn before I can actually get out a real yawn.
At the same time I have these yawning problems(pretty much daily), it seems that I also have trouble taking deep breaths. It just seems that no matter how much air I take in, I still feel like I didn't take a good deep breath.
I used to smoke for 5 years. I quite the October before the problem occured(cold turkey, haven't had one since!). I thought this may be the reason, but two years later and the problem is still going strong. Sometimes I stay up for hours at night, because of the sensation to yawn, yet i can't get one out. This is so frustraing. I'm only 28, I don;t want to live with this forever.
I've also noticed that for an extremely long time now, possibly since this whole yawning thing started, that I always seem to have phlegm in my throat. I have alergy pills(Allegra) but they don't seem to do anything. I don;t really have a cold or anyting, I can breath fine through my nose, I just seems like the phlegm is stuck in my throat.
Also, I have acid reflux disorder, although I've had this my whole life, but I never felt the heart burn until 6 years ago. When I get heart burn I feel it right where my throat and chest meet, never in my stomach...in case that info is useful.
Anyway, if anyone has any idea's I would love to hear them. This is something that has caused me so much frustration the past two years.
Thanks,
-Mike

Mike, I would like to know the answer to this question. I have had this before but have not dwelt on it. The more I thought about it, the more it seemed to become a problem. I, too was a smoker but quit several months ago. I think some of this is psychological because the more I tried to get out a "full" yawn the more difficult it became. Finally, I just took a sleeping pill, forgot the yawning phase, and went to sleep. LOL, just kidding.

Mike, check out the following archives on this site:
bracing, GERD, skilled relaxation, and wellness. If you read about these topics for a while, you will see how all of your symtoms are related and how all can be eliminated.

Hi Mike. You could have a magnesium deficiency. Problems taking deep breaths and tingling sensations are signs that you may need extra magnesium. Follow Jon's advice and take a look through the archives. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. There is a lot of information here.

Mike,
I have had this problem off and on for as long as I can remember. Someone I work with commented that I was sighing a lot one day. Then later I read an article on the Internet (can't remember where) and it referred to magnesium deficiency and that these people tend to sigh a lot. I added magnesium as a supplement, learned a bit about various types and absorption and it seems to help. I am having some challenges with this right now, but I'm a bit stressed both personally and professionally so I probably need to add a dosage to see if it helps.

I would try to do the deep breathing first it sounds like you are trying too hard. I don't ever yawn just sometimes when I am relaxed I guess or tired, I don't try to yawn, or maybe I don't understand what you are talking about? Sorry If I am mistaken.

Mike,
You could be doing a form of hyperventilation -- sighing and lots of deep yawning.
I would recommend trying breathing exercises, but rather than doing deep breathing, the Buteyko method might work better for you. It basically teaches you to NOT take in so much oxygen. I found that it worked well for my sighing and yawning. Teresa Hale wrote a book called Breathing Free that explains the Buteyko Technique. It's fairly easy to do.
You also probably have a bracing problem. Work on SR twice a day and try to realize throughout the day when you are bracing (clenching). SR is amazing the more I read about it. I'm totally convinced that it's one of the most overlooked cornerstones to good health.
Taking magnesium is also probably a very good idea. Read the archives to learn which kind to take. Frankly, I think cutting out ALL sugar and refined carbs can help dramatically, too. Get Beth Loiselle's book to help you with your diet.
Try the ginger root juice for your GERD. It's also in the archives.
I hope this helps.
Martha
PS Congratulations to you and the other poster who quit smoking!

Phlegm can persist for a long time after you quit smoking. About yawning, I'm not sure. You might have a problem with blood circulation related to smoking (this too will improve and disappear eventually). It seems as if your autonomic nervous system (which is overstimulated by smoking) seems to struggle to find a balance again. Perhaps light exercise could help.
Your worrying and impatience to get over it might actually contribute to the problem. Whatever the solution, please try to accept that body heals slowly and relax, don't let it affect you. You'll get over it.
It will be interesting to see what Dr. Stoll will say.

Hi,Mike.
This is bracing. You might become a student of therapeutic breathing techniques for your SR. See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms and then use the home page and the archives till you begin to understand how this all fits together (including your GERD).
Lete us know what you learn.

Dr. Stoll and others, thank you so much.
I have many questions, but I will save them until I've read through the archives and done some research. Hopefully I'll be able to answer them myself.
Thanks again, I can't tell you how happy I am that I have somewhere to go with this now. I have seen multiple doctors, had a sleep study, and all sorts of tests and know one could tell me what's wrong.
I'll let you know how everything works out.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
-Mike
