Dear Dr Stoll
I have visited this site many, many times & have learnt alot.I have had vague mystery health problems for 5 yrs now after the birth of my 1st child. I have been to GP,chiropractor, natropath, osteopath, kinesiologist, acupunturist. I seem to go 1 step forward,2steps back.my problems are fatigue, muscle pain in shoulders & neck . Headaches & tender points at back of head. The muscle pain feels not just surface but deep inside. the headaches can be felt behind my nose and in a central line down. they can be triggered by bending over or turning a certain way. I can go to bed with no headache and wake up with one. My doctor told me my leg lengths were different and to build up one shoe. the osteopath said leg lengths are the same but pelvis twisted. Acupuncturist said no problem just lack of oxygen to brain which would make sense if muscles are tight. Bracing does explain alot as also seems to affect my nervous system. What really confuses me is the triggers of these symptoms. Jogging nearly always aggravates and/or triggers symptoms, particularly if I go 1st thing in the morning. I decided to give up jogging and go walking instead but even this triggers symptoms. If my body is out of alignment, could the feet impact trigger symptoms. when I get home from jogging/walking I feel terrible, sore shoulder muscles, shivering cold, fatigue, headache, frequent urination - I can almost feel the shoulders, neck, back ceasing up as I am exercising. The exercise connection is what really confuses/worries me. I am also aware of heart palps, felt in my back & have had this checked out. could muscle tension cause this. body position also seems to trigger this,i.e turning over in bed. I am practicing 2 legs of the wellmess stool. I am not practicing SR (except yoga) due to circumstances. I run a fulltime business and when not there I have 2 small children. am temporarily living in a very small house, no privacy or quiet space for SR although this will change. any clues would be truely appreciated as I do worry and don't understand why exercise doesn't help me feel better??
thanks in anticipation

Hi Bubbles,

Your symptoms sound a lot like the ones I had. What has helped me the most was SR (really, find a way to do it!), stretching (full body stretching daily), plus supplements in megadoses, especially magnesium and B complex.

Massage might give some temporary relief of the head, neck, and shoulder tension and can, for some people, be a really helpful and good idea. In my case, I was bracing so much before I started serious stretching and SR that it wasn't effective until about a year into doing the practices. Rolfing might also be a good option for you. Some of my clients who brace tightly but don't do SR come for massage every 2 - 4 weeks and it helps keep them loose.

I had to give up exercise completely (I couldn't even do 10 situps 3 days in a row) because it tightened muscles and then they went into spasm. However, stretching loosens muscles instead, and helps a lot. Now, about 2 years into the program, I'm so much better I've just started an aerobics program and am doing well with it. I'm glad to finally be able to exercise.

The alignment problems you experience are partly or totally due to the bracing. "Muscles hold bones in place." I found that by doing SR and stretching, my body went back into alignment -- partly by itself through SR, and partly by learning to keep the really bothersome places loose by stretching.

My palpitations decreased by use of magnesium but SR also helps a lot.

It is the balance of and/or alternation between exercise and rest that is healthy, not just doing exercise. It sounds like you don't get any rest (SR) and if you keep up this trend, you will not get better but may get worse. Can you do the SR when you are at work instead of at home?

Best wishes,
Happygal (Certified Massage Therapist)

running on empty. I also have two children, now ages 6 and 4, and a teenage stepdaughter. Since my son was born 6 and half years ago, I had been going nonstop. I knew I needed to find time during the day to do something like meditation (this was before I found this site), but I just never made it a priority and never made the time. I nearly crashed and burned this summer. A person's body can only take so much (each person has their own individual chemistry), but it sounds like your body has been giving you signs for a long time now. It's hard when you have children, but you have to make yourself a priority. I found that I am a much less effective parent (and person overall) when I don't take care of myself. Good luck!

I think you have too many cooks in the kitchen (MD's)...
First of all, legs can differ depending on the day, your bracing, tension and so on. My legs can be measured one day and be off, and the next day, be the same.
I'd continue your yoga, but would not consider it SR unless you are REALLY INTO IT...and it isn't 100% SR as you can't really do yoga and meditate unless you do your yoga and spend 20 minutes in say, lotus position, meditating.
I'd work on SR. You mention that you have a lot going on, and that with the situation at hand, you can't do SR. I say that's phooey. Anyone can do SR in any situation. A lot of us have kids, ill parents, jobs (or more than one) and other obligations - it's a matter of do YOU care enough about YOU to take time for YOU - to be better/healthy not only for you but for others. A stressed Mom isn't as good as a relaxed mom, or a mom who feels good - you know? Do it for your kids if you need a reason other than "you"...
Learn to meditate..it's worth it. Yoga is the union of body and spirit, but most classes or tapes are more Western oriented, not Eastern...so I'd seriously look into additional SR alternatives...
And the aches and pains you describe.... they are all stress (to me) and the palpitations also...
Make sure you have a cal/mag potassium - and/or electrolytes up... make sure you begin working out - not just Yoga... and make sure you take time FOR YOU.
I bet once you change your mindset the body will follow. It did for me! :) Hope this helps.

thanks heaps happygal - the alignment thing really confused me as surely no one is completely symetrical and how could this make me feel so bad. I have been having massages but only monthly. so I guess it's SR,SR,SR.

Hi, Bubbles.

Listen to Happygal, Steven, Carol D & Michele!

You are a good example of a developing "boardman syndrome" (stiff as a board).

You are also a good example of people doing the very thing they most need to do LAST.

3 deep, total body massages a week forever might help for a year or so. A series of 10 Rolfings or Hellerworkings woudl help for a year or so. There is nothing that will permanently resolve this without your becoming an expert in SR.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt

thanks Dr Stoll
I often wonder what would happen in I hadn't found your site. I mean there must be thousands, millions of people out there with health problems that their doctors can't help and think they are hypocondriacs, etc. there must be people that are even suicidal because no one knows what is wrong. I used to be too scared to go to my doctor because he would think - 'here we go again-what this time'. I gave up saying anything to my family about how bad I was feeling. It is impossible to feel empathetic towards someone else's health problems if you can't feel their pain. I used to just struggle through the day and hang out for bed time with fingers crossed I would feel better the next day. The worst thing is always wondering if you are imagining it. In the weekends if I had a sleep during the day, I would feel guilty, and lazy. because of your site I have managed to finally give up smoking after years of procrastination. that was a huge thing for me to achieve.
I will practice my SR so thank you once again.
Bubbles
