crunching/grinding sounds in neck

Posted by Beverly Moss on November 16, 2003 at 15:49:55:

Back in the mid 80's I feel down a narrow flight of stairs where I worked at the time. I bruised one whole side of my body. About 5 years or so later, I awoke from a nap and stood up, I felt very lightheaded, arms and fingers were weak and tingling. I went to the doc the next day and he thought it was rheumatoid arthritis, which could have been from the fall. That feelingwas a 1 time event. Now, naby years later, I still have the crunching when I turn my neck, and if I stand to long, or sit to play say a video game, I get a burning right on that 'ball' at the base of my meck. Could this be arthritis and what would cause this crunching and burning? This only happens if Im standing at the counter say for an hr or so cokking or slicing things. Thanx

Hi,

One doesn't get RA (rheumatoid arhritis) from a fall. A fall or injury could exacerbate pre-existing psoriatic arthritis or result in osteoarthritis, however.

I have the same noise in my neck, and mine is caused by arthritis.

Hi Beverly,

It sounds like you have tight neck muscles. Have you gone to see a chiropractor or massage therapist yet? If this was my neck, I would consult with both, get the neck muscles loosened up, plus start a daily stretching program to make sure the neck muscles stay relaxed and don't tighten up again.

Also read the information in this website about "bracing" and what to do about it: "Skilled Relaxation". See the glossary and articles. If you are standing for an hour and your neck gets aggravated, bracing is most likely involved and you would benefit from getting rid of it.

Best wishes,
Happygal (Certified Massage Therapist)

Hi, Beverly.

BRACING. BRACING. BRACING!

Listen to Happygal and Arthritic. if this is not arthritis by now it evertually will be.

Get rid of your bracing and let us know how you are doing.

I had a feeling you were going to come back with that infamous 1 word answer. Bracing has nothing to do with it, its not THE answer to everything!

I also developed crepitus (crunching noise) in my neck about 2 or 3 years ago. I definitely have a tendency to brace in my neck area. SR helped eliminate the tension.

I'm not sure if I understand this entirely but bracing can lead to LGS. LGS can release toxins into your body which can settle in between joints, like the neck. The crud in between your neck bones might have something to do with your crepitus. ???

It's something I'm working on, too. Luckily, I do not have pain and am trying to heal myself before problems escalate.

Good luck,

Martha

Thanks, Beverly.

Of course not! However, ignorance is bliss. Have you any better answer for this? If so let's hear it. I am all ears.
