I have had a lumpy feeling in my throat for a year now. I have almost every test you can think of related to this problem, to rule out any serious problems. Test did not find anything. After the birth of my child I started feeling this way. Many have said this is stress. But every single day for one year. That does not make sense to me. I do notice that everything I eat I am swallowing mucos. I don't know if this can be part of the problem. Also my throat feels warm all the time and tight. I feel mucus dripping all the time. But I don't think it can be respiratory problems. Can it? I am feeling like I am going to have a nervous break-down because it wont go away. Any help would be appreciated greatly.

Just to let you know you are not alone. The Doc on this website talks about bracing, which what I understand is a reaction to stress. My throat pain is related to some mild heartburn. I went to my Regular Doctor and he said I had nothing in my throat and suggested allergy pills and gave me Clarinex. I also started 2 days ago taking Anti-Anxiety pill called Buspar which is supposedly mild and non-addicting. The Doc on this WS suggests skilled relaxation. I am doing a program on anxiety & depression that a friend let me borrow. Do a test, when do you feel the pain most and write down the time and what is going on at that time and maybe 1/2hr before. I hope the Doc can help you and other people on this Website. my email is jmclassic@yahoo.com I hope you get better soon!!!

Have you had your thyroid tested?

I've had a similar feeling, if not the same thing you are feeling. It started last summer. My doctor thought she felt nodules on my thyroid (which, theoretically, if they were big enough, could push in on my throat, causing the sensation). An ultrasound and CT scan of neck revealed nothing. Tried Xantac and it went away. Turns out it was GERD (gastroesophageal reflux).
I knew that I didn't want to take proton-pump inhibitors like Xantac (just treats the symptom and not the cause; potential for side effects), so I just tested it out to see if it would work. I later found this web site and found that Walt recommends ginger juice to treat symptoms of GERD (while working on fixing the underlying causes). Read the article on the home page about Upper Gastro Intestinal System Relief for the Ginger Juice Protocol, which is better and has no side effects. It won't hurt you to try it.
If in three weeks on ginger juice the feeling isn't gone, then you might explore "globus hystericus" (which is that feeling a person gets when they're trying to choke back tears).
You'll definitely also want to read about Skilled Relaxation, bracing, and leaky gut syndrome. Good luck!

Other than the lump, do you get gagging when things are in your mouth, like a toothbrush? Or when you are very stressed?

Hi,
If the ginger juice doesn't work for you, you might think of trying some acupuncture. It sounds as if you have what the Chinese call 'plumstone throat', which is a symptom of Liver energy stagnation, very much stress-related.
SR (skilled relaxation), as suggested on this site, also should get you there, but might take longer. Good luck.

Kelly,
This is called "globus hystericus" (look it up) and is caused by bracing which is always due to stored stress-effect.
Use the archives to see what I am talking about and get started with serious SR.
Let us know how you do.

The ginger juice is new to me. How much should I take? where can I find it? How long should I take it?
Any info would be great!
Thanks!

It is stress. Diet change (if needed), exercise, Rolfing or deep body massage 2-3 times per week for 3 weeks should do the trick short term.

Kelly,
Look in the GERD home page article or the archives.
