Treating benign sex headaches?

Posted by Phil C. [1194.74] on August 24, 2004 at 10:41:22:

Hello -

About 2 1/2 years ago, I experienced my first occasion of benign sex headache. For those of you unfamiliar, it is an intense headache which begins during sexual excitement and builds until orgasm. After orgasm, it starts to subside, but the pain is very intense, and it can take varying amounts of time to subside competely. It usually clears up on its own in time. For me, it lasted about a week. You can help it by abstaining or taking medicine, like ibuprofen, a couple of hours before having sex.

I hadn't had an incident since then until a few days ago. It happened during masturbation. I knew immediately what it was. It makes one afraid to engage in sexual activity because the pain can be quite intense and unpleasant. I guess it's a matter of time until this episode subsides completely.

My question is: does anyone who is familiar with this form of headache have any additional information or advice on how to overcome it as quickly as possible? I'm visitng my girlfriend for a week from September 1 - 9, and not having sex is NOT an option. I suppose I can take the ibuprofen before doing it, but I thought I'd ask if there was anything else I can do to get over it completely before I see her. Any info that anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

Many thanks -
Phil C.

Hi Phil,

Headaches which are caused by excitement can be due to blood vessels which are too relaxed... such as in potential
aneurisms..

These are the type of headaches which are warned about in the literature describing Viagra.

If you are concerned about this, maybe an MRI of your
brain would be a good idea. It would rule out any risk to you that might be due to getting too excited.
This might be the reason why there is so much talk about having a cigarette after sex... It constricts blood vessels.
I guess you are a non-smoker. :(

I have experienced these before and I thought then that they were of vascular origin. They were quite severe for a short while and scared me but would eventually go away. My question would be is this a sign that you have vascular or blood flow problems? My dad died of a heart attack at an early age and my brother has already had the arteries in his legs opened before the age of 45.

how's your iron level?- my cousin who died of a heart attack at age 42 had a condition of excess iron- the cure is apparently bloodletting, so donating blood two or three times a year both gives you a free check on your level and brings it down for you if that should be a need of yours.

Hi, Phil C.

These kind of headaches can only occur if the individual is already carrying total body bracing. Treating the headaches as a simple muscle tension headache (see the archives) will resolve it. However to prevent them one must discharge the total body bracing. See the glossary and the archives.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
