I am 23 years old and was recently diagnosed with Occipital Neuralgia. I had it the first time in 2002 for 4 months and the doctors could figure out what it was but it just went away. In Jan 04, it came back and I haven't been able to get rid of it for the last year. A neurologist, has given me nerve blocks, and am currently on Neurontin, which controls the headaches a little. The doctors don't know what to do anymore. I have continual pain in my left occipital nerve and the pain level flexes. I only work barely 4 hours a day and it gets so bad I can't function. Please help me..

Consult a chiropractor or cranial osteopath.

Hi Melissa,
Have you had antibody titres (Igg & Igm) looked at to rule out shingles (herpes zoster)? Taking antiviral meds such as valtrex can help to preven a permament neuralgia if an active viral infection is present.
Has a new boyfriend show any signs of herpes?

I would see a chiropractor, and perhaps also someone that knows something about myofascial release. For a similar condition, I had to see a NUCCA chiropractor after the regular chiropractor couldn't get the right adjustment.

Massage should help.
Have you looked into accupunture also? Couldn't hurt.

Hi, Melissa.
Look at any anatomy atlas and you will see that the occipital nerves go right through the attachment to the skull of the trapezius muscles! Chronic bracing of that muscle (the most common muscle for bracing in the body) is THE most common cause of this condition and SR, massage/Rolfing and chiropractic are the most effective ways to deal with it.
See the bracing note in the glossary and the archives and let us know how you do.

Thanks, ChironDave.
It really P----S me off that conventional medicine is so ignorant. Thank goodness for Chiropractic for these kinds of problems!

Have your doctor give you a prescription for a physical therapist who does cranial massage. You'd be surprised at how much of an effect it can have on your condition.

I am 26 and have also been diagnosed with Occipital Neuralgia. I have suffered with the headaches since 1993 and they have now become very permanant. I have done nerve blocks, which only last two to three days, Neurontin, Topamax, Elevil, Indomethacin, and chiropractic. None of these have worked for me. I still suffer daily with the pains. I had to go on short term disability at work due to missing so much and now I have filed for permanat disability due to my doctors stating that there is just nothing more they can do other than try to treat the symptoms with pain meds. One doctor wanted to cut the nerve completely. I looked into this and got a couple more opinions and decided that the risks of that extreme are too great. I am suppose to be going to a Univerity Hospital setting for another opinion. I hope it goes better for you. I would love to talk with you some more. I know how lonely it is having this disease. I don't feel like I have anyone to talk to that truly understands, even the doctors. My email is rhlonewolf@aol.com if you want to write back. Good luck.
