Neck cracking and popping update

Posted by Cathy [4682.2842] on March 21, 2009 at 20:54:08:

I am 57 years old. My neck has been cracking and popping for about 3 months. I got an x-ray; the middle 3 bones in my neck are straight (not curved). My X-ray from 20 years ago shows the same middle 3 bones in my neck were straight. Also now I have some degeneration (Stenosis, bone ridging). I have tried jell-o, and chiropractics for 2 months. Hyaluronic acid, Boron, copper, Vit. C, Manganese and traction for 2 weeks. My neck is still about the same. Anyone have any success treating Disc degeneration?

Cathy,

Too bad no one steered you to SR way back then. This would have straightened itself out long ago. Now that it has gone on so long all the SR will do is get rid of most of you symptoms, over 6 months to a year, and delay more progression for the rest of your life. Feldenkrais, Alexander technique, regular massage or Rolfing will give you quicker but more temporary relief of symptoms and progression. See the archives for all these suggestions and choose.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt

Cracking and popping sounds as well as uncomfortable stiffness after sitting for a while drove me at the age of 55 to begin doing hot yoga (Bikram classes 3-5 times a week). Before a year of regular practice lapsed, my symptoms were gone.

Hopefully , others with this problem will add this approach to their list of things to try.

Hi Kay,

That is very interesting. I've heard other people say good things about doing Bikram yoga intensively for an extended period of time, like every day for six months.

Best wishes,
Jan

I'm 65 -woke up one morning with cracking and popping sounds in my neck. When I sit, cracks and pops more.X-rays show disc degeneration--Dr. says nothing can be done--comes with age. Anyone try joint pills?-what about exercises? Chiropracter wants too much money, insurance won't pay. Yoga? feeling depressed--in good physical health otherwise.

Hi Rose,

Read Walt's post in this thread. He covers the bases for how to work with this - starting with SR and finishing with rolfing.

Best wishes,
Jan

Rose,

Properly practiced SR will certainly help without harm and is free.

Decompression therapy (a newly available chiropractic technique) will give you immediate relief of symptoms, although temporary, and you can determine whether the cost is worth the relief.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
