A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with the paranoid schizophrenia. She is on heavy medication which has stabilized her condition enough that she is no longer hearing voices. Unfortunately the drugs are so strong that it is as if she is not really present. She is depressed and seems basically flattened by her situation. Do you have any insight or information on this condition?

Hi, Tracy.
Have your friend research the brain chemistry archives and read Dr. Philpott's classic "Brain Allergies".
THEN, if she is interested have her write on the BB.

Who's to say that hearing voices is necessarilly is a sign of sickness?
But if you believe it is, I recommend that you get a copy of April 2001 issue of Townsend Letter to Doctros & Patients. It contains lots of information on this topic. Mostly, on using orthomolecular medicine. Here's a quote from it:
"In the treatment of schizophrenia, the American Schizophrenia Association Committee on Therapy reported 80% recoveries based on a follow-up of 1,500 patients. Other physicians report a recovery rate of more than 75% and consirably higher in children. The orthomolecular treatment has been found to be highly effective in treating many other disorders including depression, behaviour and learning problems in children, alcoholism and problems associated with aging.

Then there was an article on Vitamin B3 and schizophrenia by A. Hoffer, MD, PhD, FRCP (C)

Hi Tracey.
it is probably hard to tell what causes your friend's schizophrenia, as many things get diagnosed by that label, and many of them have different causes.
The mental cause I'd suspect is being in some sort of a conflict and feeling unable to resolve it. INstead of recognising the absurdity of the situation, the mind sort of 'turns onto itself'. A conflict can arise between own needs and those of the environment, for instance.
Then there is a possibility of a severe allergic reaction, as dr. Stoll suggested, or of an extreme metabolic type, that is, a diet related issue.
In addition to Brain allergies, you may wish to check these books (Watson's is probably easiest to find in a library or you can buy used ones at amazon.com).
Healing the mind the natural way
Nutrition and your mind
I believe this knowledge will be helpful even if it doesn't provide a miracle cure.

Thanks, R.
Excellent resource! I had to give up my subscription when I left practice.
