Friend with suspected breast thickening..msg

Posted by Rachel on September 20, 2002 at 10:27:40:

My girlfriend had her yearly exam on Monday. The Dr. found a breast thickening at 3:00 (place wise) in her breast - only one breast. She went in for her first mammogram and had an ultra sound yesterday. What was found was a inch big "spot" that had lots of miniscule calcium dots all around it. The Dr. said at first glance he has to wonder why the calcuim deposits are not spread throughout her breast versus lumping together in one area and that he suspects there is something blocking the calcium from making its way around. She is going to be getting a needle biopsy next week. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer about 6 months ago and is doing well with the treatments. My girlfriend is 32 years old. Guess I'm just looking for experiences or thoughts as to some possible outcomes. I read all the archives that had anything to do with breast cancer and there wasn't much information there that was similiar.
Thanks.
R

Hi, Rachel.

From what you have said here, this calcium appearance is called "punctate calcifications" and that is a common finding in breast cancer. If the needle biopsy is negative, I would get a real biopsy.

Let us know what she learns.

The suggestions in the cancer archives are not only valuable in treating cancer but in preventing it.

Walt
