I am a healthy 33 year old female. Just recently had my first full physical exam and everything was perfect; all cell counts, cholesterol, etc...
Just finished my period about four days ago and noticed that I have been having on and off pain in my breasts in different places. Not a type of pain that's "ow" but its definately there. I do self exams in the shower every week and have no incidence of breast cancer in my family. Do you think this could be hormonal? I've never had a mammogram (they wait until 35 years of age unless running in the family) and I'm wondering if I should for peace of mine (though I hear mammograms are not the way to go - there is that newer technology now (is it thermography or something like that?). I guess my main concern is the obvious feeling of pain and of course I want to make sure to be proactive in making certain I'm ok. Just wondering what this could be. Also, and not sure if this makes any difference but a friend of mine had her exam and they found a mass that she is going to have a needle biopsy on this week. I was with her when they showed her the x-rays with the mass and it was very upsetting. Could my pain be related to how emotional I felt experiencing that with her?
Thanks!

Hi, Rachel:
Over the years I had experience with pain in my breasts. I think a lot of it had to do with the birth control pills that I took. Also, I was told to avoid caffeine.
I ended up with breast cancer, but I can see some things that I would change.
If I had it to do all over, I would not take any birth control pills or hormones to regulate periods.
I would not have any mammograms. I think would have a thermogram, instead.
I suggest that you buy the book, the Breast Cancer Prevention Diet. And check out Dr. John Lee's site. He has information on natural hormones and has written some books about what the doctors won't tell you about about breast cancer & menopause.
Also, go to Shirley's Wellness Cafe on the Internet. She has a lot of healthy, empowering information for women.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Empower yourself, relax, and think positive thoughts.
God Bless,
Pam

I had been on birth control pills since I was 17 due to ovarian cysts that I had. I have since gone off it, about eight months ago at least. Never before had I experienced any pain until this past week. Do you have bc in your family? how was it found, by you or by a Dr? I'm hoping its just a hormonal thing but think I will try to push my gyn appt. up just in case.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi, Rachel:
Yes, my grandmother died of breast cancer. I only learned that recently. I found my own tumor. The doctors could never find it during an exam.

Hi, Rachel-CT.
Your symptoms are definitely hormonal and that could easily be connected to your sympathetic concern for your friend. Women's thoughts are almost hardwired into their hormonal control center.
Hope this helps.
