Hi there
I just had a biopsy done a few weeks ago. The Dr was great. They used an Ultra sound to pin point the area. They whole thing took about 45 minutes. It was not painful. There was some pushing and pressure but it didn't hurt.
They numb the area first and there was a minor burning. I had no swelling afterwards just an ugly bruise. I am still a little tender but no big deal. I was told not to excerise or do any lifting for 24 hours. Also they had me put ice on the area the first four hours, a 1/2 on a 1/2 hour off.
Good luck!
Barbara

Had one several years ago. Real simple, no pain at all
(before during or after), very quick. I was surprised at
how easy the whole thing was. It's amazing how good
they've gotten at procedures like this, where it is nothing
more than a brief out patient visit with only local
anesthetic.
You should sail right tthrough this one! Take care.

Hi, CT.
Listen to Elisa and Barbara.
My problem with this is that there is a significant false negative problem with needle biopsies.
If anyone suggested a needle biopsy to me I would insist upon an open biopsy.

I took my dog in because of a lump, and he said while we could do a needle biopsy, you might get a bunch of tissues that are not conclusive...or then again, they could be conclusive!

When I first went for the biopsie, I was not prepared for what they were going to do. My DR had said it was a minor procedure with mininal pain. HAHAHA!! I freaked out and they couldn't do it. My surgeon was PO'ed. I said if I am going to lay on a table face down with my boob hanging through this hole to have this big needle stuck into it to suction "samples of my tumour extracted" I would need some kind of medication to calm me. Nope, they don't do , has to be done by a anastegiologist guy (sp?). I explained this to my surgeon ect...he said I'd have to go to my primary care Dr for any meds (NORMAL RUNAROUND AS USUAL!!). I wound up borrowing a xanax from a friend and downing it with a glass of wine the 2nd time I went. (10AM.!!) I got thru it, but the news was bad (malignant). Long story from here, but if you want to hear it , email me. Kath. P.S. Please read everything you can before making a decision!! I wish I had!!don't always trust the doctors and their "marketers"(the "breast cancer awareness team"ect... who claim they want to "help" you. Once they get you scheduled for major surgery (they actually make the appointments for you to "help you through the MAZE of scheduling ect..) you never hear from them again. On to the next victim...$$$$ It's all about $$$$. Thats where they (and the drug co.s )make their millions.Sorry for my ranting... I could go on and on and on.Please just check EVERYTHING out before you let them slice you up!! Kath

Thanks, Kath.
We need to hear more "ranting". There are plenty of victims out there who are not telling their stories!
Namaste`

I've had both...an open biopsy (basically a lumpectomy) and a needle biopsy. I would vote for the open biopsy just based on my personal experience.
The needle biopsy was guided by ultrasound and I was given a local. I have two lumps, so they wanted to get about 4-5 samples from each. The first lump was fine, but trying to get that needle around to the second lump was more than uncomfortable. Also, the local didn't go everywhere it needed to so, so when they went to take a sample from the second lump I almost flew off of the table in pain!! It hurt so bad I was in tears! I got the results back in a few days, but my OBGYN and surgeon did not agree on the results. My OBGYN seems to see signs of possible "pre-cancer" and the surgeon did not see it.
The lumpectomy was more of a "for sure" thing. Under general, they removed the lump and some of the surrounding tissue (margin) and I had the results back in 3 days. Benign.
The only reason I did a needle biopsy was because I was prone to having the lumps, so me and the surgeon decided to wait a full year (with frequent check ups) to see if any more developed. Then we could take them out at the same time.
