Dr. Stoll- in an earlier post to Michelle, you stated that
you only need a pap smear every 2 years. What is your view
on mamograms? Are they really necessary every year?
thanks

Hi, Reader.
If I were female, I would get a mammogram for baseline at about the age of 25-30. Then I would consider getting a comparison mammogram about every 10 years until the age of 50. THEN, I would consider getting one every 5 years--depending on what my previous ones showed.
However, as you must know, mammograms do nothing about preventing the problem! They only show the problem when it has advanced enough for our primitive machines to detect something.
The ideal thing is to learn what is known about the causes of breast cancer (many are pretty well known, now, and pretty easy to do something about) & decide whether it is worth the bother.
