My daughter's primary care dr found a couple of lumps in one of my daughter's breasts. My daughter is 20 years old and there is no history of breast cancer in our family.
This doctor scheduled an ultrasound, and then an appt with a surgeon for a biopsy. The ultrasound was read as her having no cancer. We went to the surgeon and he asked when her last period was. She was just starting hers. The doctor examined her, but said he wasn't going to biopsy her because she was too swollen from her period.
I said, so you're not going to biopsy her because...? He said 'which lump? How can I tell? She's too swollen. Don't worry. Breast cancer is a very slow growing cancer...'
I said, 'I"ve run a 5k for breast cancer research, my golf balls have littel pink ribbons on them. Don't tell ME not to worry. She's my daughter.
He said, 'I've got four daughters..'
I said, 'so if she was YOUR daughter you would..?'
He said, 'I have her come back in three months.'
???
I'm upset that he at least didn't want her to come back sooner. Am I over reacting? I'm also mad that her regular dr scheduled her while she was on her period. She's very regular, and they have her records. ??

Hi Trish,
Does she drink a lot of iced tea or coffee? She probably has what they call "Fibrocystic Breast", which is supposedly caused by a high consumption of caffeine. I have the same condition (although I don't consume caffeine as I'm sensitive to it). I'm 50 years old, and had a biopsy of a lump when I was 40 which was benign. I had another lump show up on a mammogram several years after that, and was told to have a repeat done in a week's time. Well the lump disappeared the next week. If they had mammograms when I was 20, they probably would have seen lumps back then. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Hope this helps.

She doesn't drink coffee, or tea, but she said she does drink cola drinks. I will pass your advice on to her, about staying away from cola or any other caffeine. She can't eat chocolate because it upsets her stomach. Perhaps her lumps may disappear? Thanks so much for your advice!
It's hard not to worry-no matter how old she is, she'll always be my baby :-) Thanks again-
Trish

Good advice, this is what i would have said, it cleared up a lot of problems for me in that area long ago; Off all the cola drinks, remember no caffeine, not even a little, must get it out of the system and then see how she does. If she would like a soda then have her try bubble water with a fruit juice added. [black cherry juice is nice in it];

Hi, Trish -
I just saw your post about your daughter's cysts. When my daughter was her age, the doctor also found 'lumps' and asked his receptionist if the lab would think he was crazy if he asked for a mammogram. Needless to say, we didn't have a mammogram. I also had fibrocystic breasts at her age and up until menopause. She is now 37 and no other doctor else has mentioned the cysts to her. I do feel that stopping the caffeine does help to get rid of the cysts. Soda contains more caffeine that coffee, right? If it were my daughter, I would not advise her to start having biopsies of each cyst. Best wishes, Raisa

Hi, Trish.
The worst thing this is is a fibroadenoma (benign tumor--very unlikely and RARELY multiple) and the most likely is fibrocystic disease which is curable (see the archives).
I think your surgeon is giving you good advice!!!!
If you insist on a biopsy in a case like this, your daughter's breasts will soon look like a roadmap and it will be your fault.
Cool it! I have a daughter too.

I'm glad you understand the concern a parent has for their daughter. Hopefully the lumps will go away-
She's taking vitamin C, quit drinking cola drinks, and hopefully will take the vitamins I keep urging her to take. She is twenty, not a minor, and ultimate decisions are left to her. And I am left with 15 years of HMO experience that has left me doubtful.
I never insist on anything until I get several opinions or more insight. Thank you for your opinion, Walt, and for caring. Don't worry. I'm a little tough on drs because of many past HMO experiences.

Thank you- I will pass that on to her-hopefull she'll start drinking more water, too. I keep telling her she probably will not miss soda pop when she stops drinking it, but she still drinks sprite. I also keep telling her the hair dye she uses every month is not good either, but....? All I can do is keep trying. Thank you for your advice. It sounds sound to me. :-)

What you're saying is encouraging. I know she'll be happy to hear your and the rest of you guys positive stories-she's hoping they will go away. I'm passing on what you guys have posted because I'm hoping it will relaxe her-I don't want her stressing out about this. She's been pretty worried, so she may stick to a healthier protocol. I hope they go away, but meanwhile, I guess she'll keep an eye on them. This is a new experience in our family, so thank you so much!

Came across something that may be of interest about Cox-2
inhibitors like in NSAID's that is said to reduce tumors.
Might be be worth investigating.
