I have had a problem for the past few months with excessive burping. It started out with me needing to burp, but these little pathetic sounds coming out. There is also some tightening in the chest area, but it is not heartburn. It does not have that burning feeling, and has no corrolation to when/what I eat. It feels more like a muscle spasm to me. I had a professional massage, and that seemed to let some of the burps out, but now it seems that I'm burping an awful lot, again no relation to when I eat, drink, talk, etc.
Does anyone have any idea what this is, and how I can fix it? One thing that has helped is taking two tennis balls and rolling/massaging them on my back - this helps me to burp, but does not reduce the quantity of my burps.
I don't have any other symptoms.
Thanks.

I have been battling the same problem for over 2 years. It may have started after a night of heavy drinking. My guess is that burping after meals is due to low HCL production. If I take massive doses of HCL after a meal, it improves sometimes. I also burp after drinking liquids. That must be air swallowing, which is most likely a stress effect. I have been practicing SR for 6 months, but the burping has not subsided, however other stress symptoms have improved. I'm going to continue the SR and see if it will eventually improve the burping. You may want to get examined for a hiatal hernia. If you figure this out, please let me know.

Allison, I would really look into the archives under bracing and see if anything in there pertains to you. You may want to try enzymes with each meal and a little hcl . If you need hcl it will help if not it will make your tummy warm. Try 1 500 mg table with a meal for one meal a day and see if there is any difference ater that meal. Good luck

Hi, Allison.
You will find this hard to believe but nearly ALL burping like this is due to "aerophagia". This is just a fancy word for air swallowing caused by nervousness & stress.

Dr. Stoll,
Judging from my symptoms, I know I am really stressed, but improving. I have been doing SR twice a day for 6 months. I have not been biofeedback tested, but I do have a lot of the relaxation responses during SR as described in the glossary. Would it take another 6 months for me to see an improvement.
Thanks,
Burpmaster

What is SR, and what is HCL? Where can you get HCL?
On other note, I'm just getting over a case of ashmatic bronchitis (unrelated to the burping), and I was given a mild dose of prednisone. This seems to have helped with the burping (which seems to indicate to me that it is a result of a muscle spasm or infamation. Like I said before, the burping has no correlation to when I eat, or what I eat. In fact, I usually don't have my burping problems during or after meals.

Hi, Burpmaster.
Perhaps, but, I would be much more comfortable predicting that if you had a certification of the effectivenes of your SR with Biofeedback.
Also, you might try to break the habit of air swallowing which is akin to stuff like nailbiting, etc.

How do you break a air-swallowing habit, if it's never been a problem before, and you don't realize you're doing it?

Hi, Allison.
It is not easy without first dealing with the stress-effect that is causing it. However, you do it the same way that one breaks any habit: They first become aware of it and then use will power to stop it.
Hope this helps.

How do you become aware of swallowing air? And why is it only happening now? My stress level is not very high - and I've certainly been more stressed before.

Hi, Allison.
You need a better understanding of the stress effect storage mechanism AND of what is meant by chronic stress itself.
See the homepage, glossary, archives and search engine for starters. THEN, if you still do not understand, read Selye's book or Pelletier's book mentioned there.
Let us know what you learn.
Breaking the habit of air swallowing IS harder than that of nail biting, for example. For starters, it is likely that, if you could have someone follow you around for an hour, and count every time you swallow in that hour (then you reciprocate with that normal person), you will find that you swallow at least twice as often as they do. That will get you started.
Let us know what you learn.
