Hello Walt and others!!!
I have been reading this BB for years, after seeing an incredible infomercial on Coral Calcium, I started trying to read into the benefits of this specific type of calcium. In getting more confused, I of course came here to read the archives, and am now more confused.
One thing I specifically liked about the infomercial was that this man actually explained that people need sunlight to properly metabolise calcium. Too many people take calcium supplements thinking that is all they really need to do, not realising that vitamin D is essential for it to be absorbed. Now this man recommended 2 hours of direct sunlight on the face per day~~~~Wouldn't this be a wonderful life if we had this time~~~Maybe I could just buy a bottle of coral calcium, move south and lay in the sun...Do not get me wrong, I'm not knocking him at all, I believe him to be sincere. For the past 3 years I have stopped using sunscreens unless I am at the ocean or similar, I do this because osteoperosis seems to run in my family. At any rate, here are some of my questions for those of us who do not have the ability to get 2 hours of sunlight per day...Since vitamin D is produced from certain sunlight rays when absorbed by the skin and eyes, I understand it is essential for calcium absorption. I have also come across info on "full spectrum" lightbulbs", and have even heard of some people using tanning beds, not to tan, but to get the pseudo-sun rays. Are there any "synthetic/alternative" ways to increase the amount of rays we are getting? are there special light bulds that REALLY have these rays? That part seems hard to believe by me.
Also my concern is that this particular brand of coral calcium from Japan is supposed to be pure and unadulterated...containing many trace minerals and metals. How does this interfere? A lot of us out here are trying to reduce our metals intake...I know I am, have the water filtration and such, so exactly why would I want to put what I am removing from my water back into my body???(speaking of the metals, not the chlorine and other crap). I have heard that some parts of the oceans/seas of the world are more contaminated than others...
The more research I am doing, the more confused I am getting...PLEASE...give me some insight.
Also, is there a specific way to test our body's PH level at home??? My doc just shakes his head and thinks it is not important. And I have been through several docs, so changing yet again will only cause more time wasted. I truly want to test my PH, and if I do this, I am sure if the test used saliva like the infomercial says, it would depend on many factors, like what I have recently eaten, how long it has been since I brushed my teeth, if I were chewing gum...How is PH tested, where can you go, does it require fasting, is it blood or saliva? Blood would seem more realistic, since the mouth is even affected by breathing...I am in Pittsburgh Pa, if I need to go to a lab.
Also, this coral calcium is "supposed" to be 100% absorpable by the body (but please note in the infomercial he does state several times though a bit less emphasis is placed on this---the coral calcium is 100% absorbable by the body when you are getting 2 hours of sunlight per day, and because it has the proper trace minerals in it"-or something very close to that statement--i watched this infomercial a few different times to read between the lines).
I have read some bad experiences, but not conclusive (Donna-because she was on a diet also), and I have read some good ones. What is the deal with this type of calcium? It is supposed to have been used in Japan for 600 years, on people animals and even crops. Also, is there a good way to get pseudo-sunlight? An e-friend of mine uses the tanning bed for 5-10 minutes per day...says it is the newest bulbs that are closest to the sunlight, note again, she does not use it to tan...she honestly believes this will help her body produce vitamin D in order to absorb calcium. I cannot say she is wrong, so I come here to question her method.
Walt, you always tell us to do our own research...well, with so many different types of calcium out there, and other things aside from vitamin d that are needed to get the best absorption, leafy vegies and dairy aside, how do we best supplement??? What do we use to best supplement??? and how to we get more good sunrays (is there any alternative way for those of us who live north or do not have a 2 hour lunch break??? :) Oh ya, and finally, what is the best way to test the body's PH???
Thank you so much, sometimes the research is overwhelming and confuses the issue. Maybe there is 1 best way...in the perfect world...right now i'm just looking to clear up the confusion so I can decide which supplement to take!!!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Celena

my brother is proclaiming the virtues of coral calcium to me (though he doesn't take it!) and one night I saw barefoots informercial. One of the first things i noticed was how little INFORMATION was being given (if any) considering this was a man who claims to be a scientist. He never cited a single study, whether one of his or anyone elses, and he had nothing to support what he was saying other than generalities about a few high-calcium intake populations. He didn't talk about the Chinese, who don't take calcium supplements but almost never experience osteoporosis, while getting maybe 300mg of calcium or so a day. Well, i'm the first one to say that anecedotal evidence is often very compelling and worthwhile, but if you're going to ask people to take 30 times the RDA of a mineral, you need some pretty good studies to back you up. As for him appearing to be sincere, I wouldn't be able to say that -- to me he came across as more of a promoter.

Hi,
I may not have all the answers to your questions, but Doug Kaufmann talked about Coral Calcium on his program, Your Health.
He said that his wife had a friend who had a bad headache. Doug's wife gave the friend coral calcium to drink and the headache was gone in 10 minutes.
Doug had a guest speaking over the phone about Coral Calcium. The man was Dan Salloway who has a radio program in Oklahoma. I believe this Dan is a nutritionist.
Anyway, Dan said that the coral calcium needed to be live from Okinowa (sp?). He said many people call in to testify of the benefits.
Dan said if the coral calcium comes from a dead source, such as coral that has died on the beach, that it won't be as effective.
I watched those infomercials, too, and was impressed. I'm not sure where to get this coral calcium that Dan speaks about.
But, I would like to try it to discover if it has a positive effect. It surely can't hurt a person, like pharaceuticals can.
So, why not give it a try?
Pam

Hi, Celena.
In MY opinion, it is all hype. 10 years from now no one will ever hear about CC again.
I hope I am wrong; the supplement of the ages has finally been found and we are all saved.

Celena, Let me put my two cents in..As a user of coral calcium I have seen a improvement in my over all health, and I was in good health before I started taking it..Order the books and read them..The research has been done, but you decide for yourself..Try in for 90 days, then ask yourself am I feeling better? Walt, don't knock it unless you have tried it..To your good health..Steve

I wonder about sunlight since I became a night owl
and don't function well in the daytime and traffic
and I like Dim light in the house so have the
windows covered with only a little light coming in
and I could cover that but it does tell me day from
nite.
I was never a sun worshiper like friends are and
before I became nocturnal I noticed that the sun
would feel like it Burned through my skin even on
days that weren't hot so I figured that the
depleted ozone layer could be the reason and figured
that geting out of the direct sun may be more than
enough. I wonder if the rays that are needed could
come through walls or some other way ?
I have often wondered how nocturnal animals get
their rays unless they get them from moon light
that is reflected sun ? My long haired black hounds
prefer to be in the house are are rarely left out in
the daytime and there is a roof with tarps on the
sides to keep rain and snow out and their eyes and
nose seem like the only way sun could get into them.
It would seem that I would be severly depleted of
calcium with my rejection of the sun but last night
I dropped a heavy electric motor on my sandaled foot
and it lumped up in the spot and the skin was broken.
It hurt a good bit but I put sneakers on and went
out soon after and today the swelling went down and
I have to press pretty hard to feel any discomfort
around the scab from the cut.
I have seen the infomercial and the only thing
that rings with me is that an acid ph isn't good. I
Know that will deplete calcium and don't they say
that we make our bones dense in childhood and it is
all down hill after that. Maybe drinking milk instead
of water when I was young made mine really dense.
I have a few friends who can't see in dim light
like I always could and wonder it that could
determine how much sun you need, like if the need
for seeing is also a need for Vit D for bones ? I
have had Many problems with people who needed
spotlights on to see or the sun streaming in
windows and reflecting off TV screens that made
the picture impossible to see. My mother was Always
opening drapes or turning on or 3way lights up if
saw me reading in dim light. Problem was that Then
I Couldn't read for the glare but she thought I
was going to damage my eyes though She always wore
glases. When mentioning to a GF that I was going to
rehupolster a choc brown sofa I had built, she asked
if I could do it a Light color so she could see it.
She needed multi, clear bulbs turned up full on the
dimmer to be able to see with the drapes open on a
sunny day.

Thanks, Steve.
It makes no sense to me that coral calcium would do anything. I will be happy to be proven wrong. We all need a miracle pill--the world being as it is today!
It has peen proven that, if the "doctor" (or in this case the hype) believes whole heartedly in the remedy and the patient (in this case the consumer) believes whole heartedly in the doctor, the postive placebo effect is about 75%. Let us know how you are doing in about a year.
Of course, one can say that a year's worth of feeling better is worth the cost. However, it is MUCH better to understand exactly what IS causing the improvement than ascribing it to something that is just a placebo no matter how much it costs.
I will be VERY interested in hearing where coral calcium is in 10 years.

Walt, you are correct..The only thing most of us can do is try a product for at least 90 days and if their is no improvement stop taking it and save your money..Example: MSM works great for my wife but does nothing for me..There are a lot of people selling snake oil out there, so I try to get all the facts I can but no all products work..I will let you know in a year..Steve

Walt, I couldn't resist another followup..I don't want you to think that I feel that coral calcium is the answer to all ills and thats all I take..I start the day with 500m Olive Leaf (East Park Research) I use Dr. Sinatra Daily nutrient program plus coral calcium..Throw in a low carb diet with lots of fruits and veggies..Don't forget exercise..I am 60 years and I hope both of us are sill here in 10 years to talk about it..Steve

Yah, I agree, Steve.
I just hate to see people be taken in by hype because it gives the entire concept a bad name.
Namaste`
